I think part of my fascination with technology is, the thought that if I somehow wrote the right code, I could fix or compensate for my brain, and resolve my problems for good. I just need to fix the bugs.

This is ridiculous, of course. But the notion is too tempting.

Types of Bugs

I've been randomly thinking about bugs in video games and stuff ever since the newest Pokémon released, and I feel like talking about them.

In my eyes, not all bugs are created equal. Obviously some are more pressing than others, a bug with how an npc walks shouldn't be looked at in the same vein as a bug that crashes a game.

In the end, I think there are roughly 5 different types of bugs in a game, with the severity differing between them.

Type 1: Bugs that can harm the system itself

These bugs are ones that can actually harm the system the game is on. These bugs should be patched out immediately and without hesitation.

Type 2: Bugs that make the game unable to be played

These bugs are mostly ones that make the game unable to be played. Note that this isn't the exact same thing as unplayable. These types of bugs are ones that either crash or soft-lock the game, making the game unable to be played without relaunching the game. These bugs should also be patched out.

Type 3: Bugs that make the game unplayable/unfun

Getting to less dangerous bugs, these types of bugs make the game in a state where the player can't play the game. Major graphical glitches, very low frame-rate, and bugs that block progress are some of the major examples, and should most likely be patched out. These also include major exploits such as instant infinite money.

Type 4: Bugs that most players will come across

Sometimes there are small bugs that nearly anyone who plays the game will come across. For example, if in the first major cutscene of a game an NPC starts to "freak out", most players would turn away from the game. In my opinion, if a more minor bug is less likely to be encountered in a game, there is a case that it should be kept in.

Type 5: Other Bugs

If a bug is something minor, non-distracting, and harder to find on a first playthrough without a guide, there is a case to leaving the bug in. Obviously a case doesn't mean to keep the bug in; if there is a large amount of these intentionally kept in bugs, the view of your game would be an incredibly buggy one. However, if it is a small entertaining one, leaving the bug in could get people to talk about the game.

A well known example is the swing in GTA IV. Most players wouldn't encounter this bug on their playthrough, and the bug itself doesn't negatively affect the game (it doesn't make the game crash and such). In addition, its a bug people talked about.

Code Imitates Life

So I'm coding and I'm adding test entries to a list that then shows up on the Web page. I'm having a bug where it looks like entries are duplicating randomly. I start putting entries, of course using the names of Romans, and find that the bug isn't duplicating entries it's OVERWRITING entries putting themselves in the list and replacing a different entry with a copy of themselves. The test names that revealed this bug? Octavian replaced Anthony of course.
