I've been seeing some posts that are in the vein of "if you had to vote for either 100% hitler or 99% hitler, you are morally obligated to vote for the person who is 1% less hitler"

honestly, if the only two options I had to vote for were "hitler" and "hitler sans 1%", my first thought wouldn't be "I need to vote for the person who is slightly less hitler", my first thought would be "why the heck are the only two options Hitler and Basically Hitler? Who decided this would be a good idea, and how the heck did we get to the point where these are the only two options? Why did the people decide 'ok hitler and hitler, lets goooooo', when they could at least try finding someone who is...idk...not a majority hitler??? what happens if next election, there is someone who is 100% hitler, and someone who is 101% hitler? are we morally obligated to vote for hitler? will it just get to the point where 'Oh Omega Hitler is better than Ultra Omega Hitler because Ultra Omega Hitler thinks that the color yellow should be punishable by death, but Omega Hitler only thinks it should be life in prison.' Are we just going to compromise until the point where we sacrifice everything because we compromise too much?"

Not All Bugs are Bad

First of all, this is for bugs in video games. A bug where the player slides into the void if they run into a certain wall at an angle should not be compared to a bug in a computer program that leads to a massive security breach.

Personally, I kinda like games with bugs in them. I'm not saying I don't like games without bugs in them, but I feel that video game bugs have a certain charm to them. Obviously, if there is a bug every 10 seconds, that is a different beast entirely. I'm mostly talking about games with only a few bugs.

Bugs can be entertainig, however, there are obviously some bugs that are more detrimental to an experience than others. Devs should focus on making a game bug free, but there are some bugs that could be considered as a "feature". In my eyes, there are 4 types of video game bugs, and they will be listed in how severe these bugs are.

Bugs That Make the Game Unplayable

These are bugs that literally make the game unable to be played. From softlocks, crashes, stuff of that nature. A person who plays a game normally should never ever see this type of bug.

Bugs That Give an Advantage

These bugs range from oob clips, duplication glitches, etc. These bugs are hard to place on if they should be dealt with or not, depending a lot on the style of game, how much of an advantage the bug has, and stuff of that sort. In addition, the difficulty of how hard it is for the bug to occur is a factor, and should be a large part of the process.

Consider a hypothetical game, where two duplication bugs are found. For the first bug, you can hold and item and jump in a specific spot to duplicate any item. For the second, you have to do nearly frame-perfect jumps between 6 platforms, and doing so duplicates a mushroom in your inventory. The first of these bugs should obviously be patched, but the second one does not seem to be as impactful, and due to the difficulty and rarity it might be worth it to keep in.

Bugs That Make the Game Look Bad/Unfair

These are bugs that mostly involve graphical or gameplay errors. Looking bad mostly refers to graphical, and unfair in gameplay or ai. These depend on the bug again, but a random invisible wall is an unfair bug and should be patched.

Bugs That Don't Majorly Affect Gameplay

These are bugs such as the GTA swing or some of the cutscene trickery you can do in RDR2. These bugs don't affect gameplay, and usually are few and far between. I feel these are the types of bugs that add the most to the game, as silly things like this can make gameplay more enjoyable.

Edit: This category also includes bugs that no player is going to encounter unless they specifically try to. However, this type does seep into other categories.

Obviously, don't intentionally make bugs. Also, keeping certain bugs in as "features" can effect the mood of the game.

Going back to the swing, if the swing glitch happened in a horror game, the glitch would be a lot less well received. Always consider the context of the bug within the game, how it affects the player, and stuff like that. Also when in doubt, just patch it.

Don't release a game full of bugs. One or two funny bugs is neat, but if there is a "funny" bug every minute, people won't be laughing with the game, they will be laughing at it.
