Git is seriously one of the greatest tools I've used to extend my programming operations.  I just found out I accidentally deleted half the contents of a pretty important header  file with a mistake in VIM, and somehow hadn't noticed until now (since I've been redoing a bunch of the code).  All I had to do was find where I did that in the log (git log  -p <file>) and then checkout that specific file (git checkout <shasum> -- <file>), then add and commit.  Life saver. seriously git is like a fun (dwarf fortress style) mitigation tool.
