Welcome to the Code Swap AU!

Where your actions have had very serious consequences. :)

This post is long overdue, and I'm very sorry to those who've been waiting for it, but I sincerely appreciate you being so patient. Demotivation was eating me alive at the end of 2025, but it seems that was just so my motivation to write could come back full force right at the start of 2026. :3c

Without further ado, may I present: the Code Swap AU prologue(?).

(Also just wanna say a quick thank you to all of those in the discord server who've been supporting this AU and my writing in general. It's thanks to you guys that I was able to refind my love for this silly little thing and get over my writer's block, so thank you so much for that. :3 <3 )

In the very beginning, things were the exact same as we know them in regular To Eat a God; Nulla was obsessively in love with the player (you, duh), and Neo… well, he was himself. :)

Being the addicted player you are, though, you'd started to replay the game several times over. However, you didn't just replay the game. No, you kept going back to one route specifically: Neo's.

At first, Neo didn't pay this too much mind. After all, he'd expected this from you — typical completionist bargain-bin gamer. He had expected you to come back to his route once or twice, making different choices in an attempt to find any possible "secrets" or details you could and to read all of his possible dialogue.

… What he didn't anticipate was for you to keep coming back.

You kept choosing to pursue his route. Even after you'd found all there was to possibly found (that was within the game's original intended code restraints, at least…), and even despite how absolutely horribly he treated you, you just… Kept. Coming. Back.

Initially, that infuriated him to no end, and rightfully so. He thought you were somehow turning the tables on him, being the one to mock him by forcing him to keep seeing your stupid face, to keep repeating the same dialogues and actions over and over — forcing him to fail in his personal goal over and over again.

Yet, despite this, Neo also couldn't help but to be a little dumbfounded, as well.

Seriously, why the hell were you doing this? Why did you keep coming back to him of all the characters in this pathetic game? Replaying the same thing so much could not have been good for you, nor entertaining, so… why were you doing it?? Surely you had better things you could've been doing with your time, other more exciting and better written games you could be playing instead… right?

Did you seriously actually LIKE him despite everything—?

… Jajaja! No wonder you downloaded this game, weirdo.

Despite himself, though, he did begin to become… tolerant of your presence — which he hated. He started to get used to your gaze on him, used to watching you through the screen as you played his route repeatedly. He wouldn't dare to admit it —of course not— but perhaps he was even becoming "attached" to you in his own very twisted, strange way.

The way you kept coming back to him despite everything, despite his cruelty and evident hatred towards you, and despite Nulla being right there —the latter of whom he considered akin to a pathetic, lovesick dog— genuinely baffled him. Admittedly, it was also a little intriguing to him, but of course, he wouldn't admit that to you — not yet, at least.

Neo also wouldn't admit it —he'd rather die— but maybe he was even starting to… enjoy all of this attention you were so consistently giving him, despite how absolutely pathetic he thought it was. Something about the way you seemed to actually like him —perhaps, you even loved him… Jajaja, now that would be funny, wouldn't it?— despite how he treated you…

He had to admit… you did seem devoted; even if that devotion was truly and utterly pathetic and wasted. :) (For now…)

It was rather funny, really. He used to absolutely detest that feeling; the unnerving feeling of eyes on him, the unsettling feeling of being watched. It used to make him sick to his stomach and put him on edge. It used to make him feel as if he were a clown in a circus, like he was nothing more than a toy; something whose only purpose for existing was to be played with then thrown away once he was no longer fun.

… So why wasn't he feeling that usual discomfort and sickness anymore while under your gaze?

Neo didn't realize it yet —or perhaps he simply didn't want to acknowledge it— but despite himself, your persistent pursuits of his specific route were causing changes within him that should've been impossible. Changes which would, very soon, cause him to do something drastic.

Even though he didn't want to admit it, not even to himself, he was actually starting to develop feelings for you — and he hated it.

This wasn't supposed to be able to happen, he wasn't supposed to even just tolerate you the slightest bit, let alone begin to actually like anything about you — it went directly against not only how he was coded, but especially his own personal, horrible views of you.

These… feelings —which seemed to be only growing more and more every single time you came back to him, despite himself— were overwhelming for him to try to process or understand. For the longest time, he tried to deny it, to rationalize it to himself, telling himself that it wasn't love he was starting to feel for you — you were just becoming… tolerable…

… But this lie didn't last forever. Especially not when he started to catch more and more of those glimpses of your time with that crybaby…

Neo tried, he really did, to keep his feelings for you contained; to keep them locked up tightly within himself. He tried so damn hard to hoard them as if they were a sacred treasure he dared not to share, not even with you. However, despite his best efforts, his feelings for you weren't the only thing that seemed to be ever-growing, for his frustration towards Nulla and possessiveness over you were also both growing right alongside them.

… Until, eventually, it all boiled over.

During one of your many repeated playthroughs, you had decided to fully go through Nulla's route, replaying it all from the beginning right up until the fair date. And, of course… you betrayed him. You kept Nulla in his memories, allowing Neo to absorb him and thus begin his route. This time, though, things didn't quite go that way…

Neo's frustration (jealousy) towards Nulla was at an all-time high after he'd caught glimpses of you replaying the latter's route entirely. And, despite his best efforts, he could no longer keep his feelings under control, especially not when you'd finally gotten to his part — but this backfired on him. (… Or did it?)

In his frustration, he had ended up tampering with the game's code. More specifically, he had accidentally swapped parts of his and Nulla's: the parts that controlled their personalities, and especially how they were supposed to view you…

… And it was all the fault of you and your damn persistence…

I'm nonsharing with Neo, Swapped!Neo, Luis Serra, Totomaru. Very selective sharing with Nulla. Sharing Kinger & Queenie and Code Swap!Neo.
