NEW TRACKS: Death Cab for Cutie – “Gold Rush”
Ever look at your hometown and remember how it used to be? Benjamin Gibbard, frontman of indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie, knows that feeling all too well when it comes to his home city of Seattle. With Death Cab’s new album, Thank You for Today, out August 17, the band released the first single from it, titled “Gold Rush.” The single offers some familiar sounds from the band as well as a new direction that has fans and critics alike excited for the whole album. While Gibbard keeps the iconic rock sound from albums like Codes & Keys (2011) and Narrow Stairs (2008), he also mixes acoustic and electronic instruments to make this single unique in terms of the Death Cab discography.
The song opens with synth, slide guitar, and percussion, sounding hectic at first. Once Gibbard comes in with the chorus, though, the song settles into a great groove and sound. In it, he sings, “Digging for gold in my neighborhood / Where the old buildings stood / And they keeping digging it down and down,” which addresses the way hometowns change while you are away. Sometimes, the places one went to as a kid have turned into apartment complexes or mini-marts. This is what Gibbard references with lines like, “We kissed beneath the streetlamp light / Outside our bar near the record store / That have been condos for years or more.”
It sounds sad initially, but the upbeat orchestration makes you approach the song differently. While it is sometimes sad to see old things go, progression can also be good and lead to such things as more jobs and opportunities for new memories. The same can be said for the new sound of Death Cab for Cutie. While fans may miss the Narrow Stairs and Transatlanticism days, the new sound is a welcome change to their discography.
“Gold Rush” is a great first single for the band’s new album, Thank You for Today. They recently began their Fall 2018 tour, showing off the new single as well as some upcoming songs.
