It was quiet when I got home. It sent unpleasant tingles down my spine. My first instinct was to quickly check my messages and look for anything that may be out of place. It was instinct. Though Monsters have been on the surface for quite some time now, old habits die hard.
A faint blue light emitting from the living room gave me pause. Magic at the ready, I quietly set my coat and keys down to stalk around the corner.
A glance revealed the blue light of a large television shining towards me lighting up the darkened area and the modest couch before it. The lamps on either end table were off but perfectly in place, no sign of trouble with any of the decorative plants scattering the room either. There was, however, the telltale sight of the human’s jacket draped over the back of the couch.
It helped ease some of the tension in my shoulders.
Ever so cautiously, I stepped forward to peer over the fluffed fabric and down to the cushions below. It was only then, at the sight laid before me, that all semblance of panic washed away, a softness that seemed to be happening more frequently overtaking my soul.
Tucked into the corners and folds of the couch lay Papyrus, the human held firmly on top and against his chest. Evidence of games and a movie spread out on the floor and coffee table. It was obvious by the discarded remote and blue light that they had been asleep long enough for the automatic timer to have turned off the console.
They were… peaceful… and calm…
I found myself staring far longer than I should, just admiring the sight and what it meant until I was forced to take a breath. It may not have been dirty, but there were still things that could be put away as they slept.
The TV was turned off, controllers put in their place, and bowls neatly stacked to be taken to the sink. However, a particular movie case beneath the table gave me pause, the title “Unchartable” catching my gaze.
A story of finding hidden treasure beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Fraught with peril and forcing the characters to overcome hardships and…
No.
Putting it away, I turned once more to look over my brother and our human.
…
Despite everything, there was truly no greater treasure than the two sleeping in this room.
