Historical and Modern Perspectives in Psychology
Historical and Modern Perspectives in Psychology
Question: Why does psychology have a long past, but a short history? What did/did not change with the development of psychology as a distinct discipline? -To answer this question, first we have to understand “long past of psychology”. Many cultures search for the meaning of soul, mind, spirit and brain throughout the history. Philosophical interest for understanding those concepts goes deeply…

Cognitive Theory in Action
Cognitive perspective suggests that how you process the world around you and experience you have is related to your behaviour, perception, mental precess, feelings, etc. Incoming sensory information goes through three stages encoding, storage and retrieval - this is interpreting the information, storing it in your memory and when it seems relevant using it!
Cognitive theory can be applied to all situations, it occurs in steps, an example of this is the following:
An person perceives that someone has done the wrong thing.
They retrieve information stored in their memory about appropriate social behaviour/right and wrong.
They decide that this person has acted out of order.
They use language to give a label to the troublemaker.
They consider possible response and consequences of action.
They decide on the best response.
They initiate that response.
Intro to Cognitive Perspective
Cognitive perspective in psychology focuses on how information taken from our senses about ourselves as well as the world around us is acquired, processed, remembered and used. This branch of psychology studies mental processes such as learning, memory, perception and how people think.
The main assumption of the cognitive perspective suggests that internal mental process as well as influences on observable behaviour are equally important to how we react and think.
ENTRY 12: Change
It’s funny how today you act a certain way and feel fine about it, but a certain amount of time later you look back and realize how stupid you had been at the time. For example: when I was younger, I typed and talked on Facebook in a certain way. At the time I thought I was being cool and amusing but years later, I could barely read my old posts without cringing and thinking: “What on earth is this? What on earth was I thinking? I can’t believe I was this horrible/naïve/immature!”
I guess this reflects the ever-changing nature of our personal constructs, schemas, templates and whatever other terms the cognitive psychologists coined from their theories.
