“Hey, Matt?”
“Hm?” Matthias ducks his head to where he knows Lukas’ face to be, nestled in his lap, and presses a light kiss to his forehead.
“Do you ever think about the future?”
He pauses. He does think about the future when he’s with Lukas, all the time - he imagines them finishing college, hauling cardboard boxes into an empty apartment that echoes with promise; he imagines their wedding, in a church or a registry office, the sound of bells and the scent of flowers and the taste of Lukas’ lips on his own; he imagines the soft, domestic evenings, curled on the couch together with steaming coffee, the child (or children - he isn’t sure yet) asleep, and everything perfect with the world.
It’s a dream so deeply woven into him, it almost feels like a memory.
“Sometimes, I guess. Why?”
Lukas doesn’t answer, but Matthias feels him shift onto his stomach and curl up closer against his chest. Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, Matthias hears him admit, “I do. Always.”
“Yeah?” His heart skips nervously, and he tightens his arms around Lukas’ waist. “What does it look like?”
The pause is even longer, this time. From the slow, steady rise and fall of his chest, Matthias can tell Lukas is wavering on the edge of sleep. His body is soft, pliant in his arms, and Matthias takes the opportunity to graze his hands along Lukas’ chest and shoulders, feeling the curve of his hips and and the shallow well of his collarbone.
Matthias has never seen Lukas - nothing beyond the tiny speck of blurred colour his tunnel vision allows - but he doesn’t need his eyesight to know every inch of him, every tender edge and curve of his body, the silk of his hair, every imperfection of his skin that only makes him more divine.
He loves Lukas more than he can express through words or thoughts or actions. He loves him with an intensity that should be impossible, a passion that overpowers him beyond comprehension.
And, he thinks, no matter what their future will bring, they have already won. They have each other, and that means they have succeeded - they are already victors in the game of life.
Lukas stirs against him, tucks his head beneath his chin, and finally whispers, “It’s beautiful.”
Matthias nods, and kisses him again, softly.
They are already glorious.
