seeing your response to my ask made me realize that Eevee and the others are kind of pathetic also I'm sorry if I came across as insensitive or cruel.
It didn't come across as insensitive or cruel, but just fearful.
The blow back from the cohost stuff was pretty intense but all people could do was push back on the stuff I did get wrong, which while fair - it didn't alive the core issue of 'hey cohost doesn't actually enforce their transphobia policies against popular users when they're transphobic'.
The only other things they could do was just...make transphobic arguments towards me like "Jolly's deadname doesn't count as a deadname!" or just, demonstrably lie like Eevee tried to about not knowing. Which I think both speak for themselves, these people are pathetic and not worth being fearful over. So, I think you shouldn't be fearful about criticizing the platform.
because of the whole co-host situation and how everyone automatically took one slight glance at the post about how co-host allows deadnaming if your chums with staff or are eevee and automatically assumed it was bullshit I'm now afraid to post anything negative about co-host.
You shouldn't be.
Here, I'll do it right now to show you that it's fine to criticize people who deserve criticism:
Cohost as a platform is very financially mismanaged like, objectively speaking. This write up is a great deep dive into it that you - and everyone should check out.
But TLDR: Their main source of funding has been a singular person.
And as of March 2024, that singular funder is.....fucking missing?
They managed to find additional funding from another singular anonymous funder to last 6 months but really how long can anyone expect that to continue? With a condition to the funding being that they actually have to post financial updates every month which they haven't been in the past. Which is something that deep dive I referenced earlier goes into as a problem.
Their mini april 2024 update was optimistic at the very least, they reduced the price of their CDN and firewall by 40% and implemented a new artist alley feature which will bring in more money, but I can't help but feel the core competency issues won't be resolved by the new funders terms, artist alley, and cut costs alone.
also lol, they let a popular furry deadname my friend and didn't even bother to respond to my or my deadnamed friends tickets about it. Despite the fact dead naming someone is explicitly against this "queer friendly" sites rules. Neat.
And yeah, despite Eevee lying about not being told and not knowing that the name she used was Jolly's deadname when this blew up earlier this year:
She was told because Jolly sent the entire Floraverse community - Eevee's spouses community - a letter with the first sentence being "The old name is my dead name, call me Jolly" and it's only been Eevee that had the issue of still using Jolly's dead name after the letter.
Except not even that is true because Eevee had no issue what so ever using Jolly's real name before the posts in question were made but after receiving the letter!
Very cool how Eevee arbitrarily forgot Jolly's real name and only remembered their deadname when making posts defaming them. Awesome! Great moderation cohost!
I'm so glad that one of your biggest expenses, payroll, is partially going to someone who is apparently paid to ignore the thing it is paid to do!!!!!!!
on the Cohost topic, in their Community Guidelines it states "do not post sexually explicit non-photorealistic visual art of characters who are apparently minors", which to me sounds like it would mean banning cub porn too? "characters who are apparently minors" sounds like it would cover underaged furry characters too, especially since it doesn't specify humans.
I mean, there's an active cub and loli tag on cohost with, surprise, cub and loli in it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I heard that the loophole thing was solved back in like 2 years on a tumblr post I saw, is that true or no?
So like, I only found out this stuff about cohost mainly on accident while looking into why they gave Eevee preferential treatment when she deadnamed my friend.
I am not an expert. I do not use this website.
That said,
The language used in Cohosts current community guidelines seems to define "Child Sexual Abuse Material" in a way that carves out an exception to cub porn in the same exact way Discord did when Kara worked there by specifying that the child in question must be human:
On the other side, I haven't been shown documentation from cohost that actually indicates cub porn is banned. Which I would think would be shared more readily if it was true that they banned it.
