I bought a dented paint bucket, unlabeled and never used for paint, off the clearance rack at a hardware store many years ago. It might have cost me 50¢. I punched a slot in the lid and began using it as a change jar. It replaced a much smaller glass change jar that I’d been using for awhile. As I told the kids: as soon as the bucket was so full that I couldn’t put any more coins into it, we would take it down to the bank and pour it into the change-counting machine in the lobby.
That day arrived recently. I couldn’t fit even a dime into it. We weighed it at 34.6 pounds (15.7 kilograms for you metric folks). That’s a little heavier than my dog. Good thing I called the bank ahead of time, because it turns out they removed their coin-counting machine a couple of years ago, so I would’ve hauled the money down there for nothing.
We considered taking it to a CoinStar machine at a local supermarket, but we didn’t like 12% they took. But the kids also wanted to sort through the coins for anything interesting. So, we made a deal: if they worked together and rolled the coins into paper tubes, we would give them each 6% of the total. I would still be losing 12% but at least it would be to my kids. Part of the deal was that they didn’t have to roll the pennies, which was at least half of the bucket; we would put those through CoinStar.
After about three hours, they had rolled $283, including $2 in pennies that Beth decided she would roll just for fun. At 6%, that earned them $17 apiece. CoinStar gave us another $15 or so for the pennies.
The kids also sorted out a handful of more curious items: two half-dollars, several wheat pennies (none valuable), a few Mexican pesos, and two old New York City subway tokens. This gives you an idea of how long my change has been piling up, as the NYC subway has not used tokens since 2003. So, these have been banging around my change jars and buckets for at least 14 years.
Now, time to start filling it up again. Will it take another 14 years?
