Man sometimes I forget how Mormon my family is. I called my dad today, & mentioned my new lip piercings. Who’s gonna tell him they’re not a secret code for “I AM LOOKING TO HAVE ORAL SEX YES”
The end of Masters of Sex…what a journey.
This final shot that was both surprising yet not.
Some thoughts…

I wanted to believe in the love. I started the show thinking Virginia was amazing. It was disappointing to see there wasn’t a moment she wasn’t calculating. There was always an angle all along—even at the very end.
Not only does the final moment sum up their entire relationship, but it coincides with the real Bill and Virginia who didn’t have a “happily ever after.” They divorced in ‘91.
The show was beautifully done and filled with interesting and complex characters. There were only a couple storylines throughout that I didn’t care for. I loved Libby’s story—perhaps the most growth out of anyone!
Bill’s complete rise and fall and rise again was like watching something magical happen. His journey was so wonderful to experience. Seeing him show open and honest love to his son at the end was the biggest flex of all.
The ending though was like a crash landing back to reality. Some people just don’t get a happy ending.
And the thing is, I don’t fault Virgina. She is who she is and she’s never made that a secret. Bill was no picnic either, he did his fair share of manipulation in that relationship.
I was so happy to see them get married. And then I was just sad for them.
10/10 show.
Rotten Tomatoes 🍅 84% which is fair.
I laughed, cried and got invested in other characters besides Bill—which was a bonus.
Final thought:
It was bittersweet and will stay with me for a long, long time. Genuinely an interesting story.
And
Michael Sheen is a
Fucking Sex God.
According to this (outdated) scholarly article full of problematic assumptions, coitus interruptus is curiously absent from discussions of contraception by Greco-Roman writers (although it does get condemned by a couple of Church fathers in late antiquity).
To address the question of "how could they miss so obvious a solution", the scholar presents cases from more recent history that show this is not, in fact, an obvious solution to many people, even after they’re told about it.
Henceforth I will also call this the Retreat, since that sounds like I, the person being retreated from, won a martial victory.
But woe! the tragic helplessness in that objection! It would be impossible to escape. Like the Dwarves in Moria. We cannot get out. We cannot get out. The end comes soon.
