Ivan Bunin, from Sunstroke: The Selected Stories of Ivan Bunin; "Cold Fall,"
A poem by Tom Snarsky
Cold Fall
Imagine a panic, coated with whispers slicked with the oils of late desire.
A cold fall burnishes the leaves against our mistaken sky. Three years ago I wished
on a star you had invented; you didn't tell me its location, so I guessed, & in the
spirit of revenge I never told you my wish. It had something to do with warning
the others, I think. They all run together now: stars, birthdays, eyelashes, a penny,
the lone white horse out grazing in the pasture.
