Yuri stared at Yuuri with his mouth wide open as he tried to process what the older skater was trying to tell him. It didn’t seem real that Yuuri was leaving. Especially after everything the other skater had gone through to get this far. And as much as he hates to admit to it, Yuuri was part of the reason that he had pushed himself so hard. Yuuri had given him so much drive and now it was just going to be gone. “What the hell? I thought everything was fine.” Or at least it had been last time he had heard from Viktor or Yuuri.

Injuries were never something to mess with, he understand that. Okay maybe he didn’t completely. Yuri had been known to push himself further than was healthy. He had always been like that and it definitely wasn’t changing it. So he u derstood thst Yuuri needed it, but that didn’t mean he had to be happy. It was going to be weird not having the older man around. He had grown used to him and Viktor at the rink.

Yuri rolled his eyes at the other skater’s comments.“It’ll be too easy to win if you’re not there. No one else really stands a chance against me.” Without Yuuri around the golds were just going to be handed to him. Where was the fun it that for him?

“We thought so too, but...they think that it’s better not to take the risk, not with how long I’ve been in competition.” He murmured quietly, unable to help a little scrunch of his nose at the reminder of it because it was so stupid, he should have been more careful to begin with. He’d managed to stay away from major injuries for most of his career, he’d been so lucky but he’d pushed it too hard this time and as much as he hated to do this he knew he had to.

Of course, he also knew that he ran the risk of losing his chance to still compete, he was already skating later than most and having to take a break could ruin him. But seeing how obviously upset Yuri was only strengthened his resolve to come back, the moment he could, just so he could keep giving him something to fight for.

“There’s plenty of others who would make good competition, you know.” He added after a moment, giving him a tentative little smile, trying to lighten the mood a bit more. “You better watch out for Phichit, he was pretty close this last season, I don’t think he’ll give up so easily.”

“I don’t know, just...something, at least.” He murmured, letting out a sigh as he fidgeted with the ends of his sleeves, honestly more concerned by the other’s lack of initial response than anything else. He expected Yuri to be upset, after all there was a begrudging amount of respect the other boy had for him and he didn’t want to disappoint him, he felt had to be so much more to him somehow.

But he was out for the season, a hard decision he’d come to at a recent doctor’s appointment where they found a concerning injury that, if he’d continued, would only risk putting him out of competition for good. Missing a season after how hard he’d worked to get where he was obviously hurt quite a bit,though, and he could only imagine it might be upsetting to someone who’d always considered him a serious rival from the very beginning (even when he didn’t believe he was).

“I wanted to be the one to tell you, Yuri, I...I might be back at the very end of the season, but it might be best I take off as much time as possible.” He mumbled softly, giving him a little smile. “You should be excited, one less person to, ah...fight for gold, right?”
