I'm looking at your liveblog tag and I need your feelings on Corran Horn, who is my absolute favorite Rogue because he's an enormous idiot who is trying so damn hard and I love him for being a pompous asshole with a heart of gold. (Also he clearly knows Mirax is way too good for him and I love her also.)

You like Corran?? This makes me so happy! A chunk of of the x wing fandom doesn't seem to love him that much but I want to share the love. I started out lukewarm towards him and now (I'm just at Wedge's Gamble, but I have a lot of spoilers) I find myself unexpectedly fond of him. I want to protect him from the violently 90s writing he is made of sometimes and write him into all of the fics. But at the same time, kudos to Stackpole for not giving me unnecessary drama (so far), him and Mirax were so mature when they first met each other, I loved the whole "let's start over despite our dads" exchange they had. I also really like this very intense former space cop who really doesn't want to be a rebel but also really does because it's the right thing. And how he was a disaster at this friendship thing, but he was also super ready to get himself killed for his squad mates. Also the Corran + Mirax + Tycho team up pranking Wedge when Wedge thought he was dead at the end of the first (?) book was a highlight of my whole life... (oh, no, I kinda want an ot3 fic now, help, stop my over-shippy brain!).

I love it, and I actually think it has a happy ending! It's about letting your children become who they want to be, not who you think they are, and about hope rising from pain, to me. A really really good one of hers for sure.

I agree very much that it’s a story about letting your children be who they want to be – but I would add that for me it’s a story about letting your children be who they are, even when what they want is something tragic and incomprehensible. The ending is happy for Serenity, but to me, the fact that she wants to live in a world where sick people are left to die alone, without help or care or tenderness, and adolescent boys are forced by their elders to kill each other to survive, is unspeakably tragic.
