After Cole’s excitement of his best friend possibly treating stars died down, conversation carried on at a much calmer level. Before they departed for their individual events, though, Cole needed a picture with his best friend.

“This way when you’re famous, I can say I know the famous doctor who’s treating other famous people!”

“I can’t believe you’re finally coming home just to leave again!” Cole exclaimed as the group chatted. “And to the desert, of all places? Watcher, that’s hardcore.”

“Technically, that’s me,” Fred said. He had been checking a text on his phone, but hadn’t missed a beat. “I’m moving to Oasis Springs to work at their county hospital. Ethan got the fancier job north of me.”

“Fancier?” Diana looked between Fred and Ethan. “What does that mean?” Ethan smiled awkwardly. Fred looked up when there was no response.

“He didn’t tell you?” He looked to Ethan. “You didn’t tell her?” Ethan shook his head.

“I was gonna say at dinner...”

“You may as well say now,” Diana said with a shrug. “Where are you going to work?”

“Del Sol Valley!” Cole said suddenly in realization. “Dude, you’re going to be a doctor for the stars! That’s amazing!”

Sadly, their time in the greenhouse couldn’t last forever, and finishing their final presentation was the sign of the end. “It’s almost over,” Cole mused as they headed into the yard to check the mini greenhouse. “Another couple weeks and you’ll be across the country.”

“Man, don’t remind me!”

“I thought you were excited!” Ethan shrugged as he cracked open the case.

“I mean, yeah, I’m excited,” he said as he pulled out his camera; They needed a few more pictures of their potted plants for their presentation. “It’s just a bit nerve-wracking, you know? I’ll be across the country at university and I’ll be alone!”

“Ethan, dude!” Cole clapped his hand onto Ethan’s shoulder, prompting him to stand. “You are going to be fine! You are amazing, brilliant, and you know we’re all just a text, call, or e-mail away.” Ethan chuckled nervously, but nodded nonetheless. “So, how about these pictures?”

Senior year saw all of the seniors working on a year-long project. Most tried to find a project that tied into their post-high school goals, but Ethan decided to take it easy on that front. He decided that the best way to spend his final year in high school was tending the greenhouse with his best friend. Cole was only too happy to have Ethan by his side. 

Together they managed the planting and watering schedules, organized the lower grades who were assigned or volunteered, and tracked the growth of the crops throughout the year. Compared to the rest of his curriculum, Ethan considered his senior project a breeze. He looked forward to spending time in the greenhouse whenever he had the chance.
