Rachel (and I love her dearly, but) has quit Glee more times than I can count on both hands and toes, but it's only ever for theatrics and she comes back by the next episode. Mercedes quit once, started her own club, recruited some of ND's best members away, kicked every bit of ass, used it as a platform to support her friend through the most hideous coming-out process imaginable, and didn't come back for a quarter of a season. Girl gets shit done.

Wants (and gets) the damn corsage and simultaneously sees how she can draw strength from independence. She never demonizes relationships or singledom, and she gets all she can out of both.

"Mercedes. Mercedesss..."

A distracted "mmm" was Sam's only answer. Setting down the two mugs he'd been holding, and instead scooping up one of the two tiny kittens snoozing on the couch, he wandered over to where his girlfriend was sitting by the window. Mercedes shifted over automatically, eyes fixed on the glittering lights of Los Angeles.

"I'm trying to decide if I like this better than snow back in Ohio," she said, softly, reaching out to stroke the little black kitten. 

"They're both pretty awesome. This one's twinklier, though." Sam settled the kitten on Mercedes' lap, then hopped up to retrieve the grey one. 

When he turned back, she was watching him, chin propped in her hand, that fond, bemused look on her face. "There is one advantage," she said, beckoning him closer. "You're here."

"Only one advantage? I'd say I'm a bunch of advantages. I mean, you get my awesome face and my rockin' bod and my killer Jimmy Stewart impressions--" Mercedes cut him off with a laugh, reaching to rescue the kitten from him, before he started asking it why they had to have all these kids, a la George Bailey.

"You're ridiculous," she informed him, cuddling the kitten close and laughing when it batted at her hair.

"Maybe. But I definitely know whether I prefer here to Lima." Sam settled back next to Mercedes, taking a deep breath. "I prefer where-ever you are. And I always wanna be with you."

"That's so sweet..." Mercedes was leaning in for a kiss when Sam cleared his throat, picking up the grey kitten and holding it so the diamond ring around it's neck caught the light.

"I mean it. Forever and ever." Looking into his speechless girlfriend's eyes, Sam slowly slid to one knee, holding up the kitten. "Mercedes. Will you spend every single Christmas for the rest of eternity with me?"
