My dream for the election is that it’s definitive. I want a 2012-style Election Day where everyone built it up beforehand to possibly be close but then the results start rolling in and it was like “Oh, nevermind. It’s obviously Obama. Everyone go to bed.”
I just want voters to put a stake right through the heart of Trumpism so that it crumbles to ash before our eyes. That’s the dream.
hi guys, i’m about to either make the biggest mistake of both my personal life and professional career, or something completely amazing is going to happen, but it’s definitely one of the two and i thought somebody ought to know!
happy belated solstice to literally just those two lesbian witches in the dar williams song, i hope they’re destroying the christian hegemony and converting their little cousin to paganism and homosexuality as we speak
some very scattered thoughts from the past few days.
when i first checked the news around 2pm on saturday – because I check the news on shabbas, because it is possible for us to practice and observe in so many different ways – the initial estimate was that four people had been killed. oh, i thought, four people. that’s not so bad. they could hate us so much more than that.
i hate this numbness that has infected me. i wish desperately i could have felt something more.
of course, i checked the news again, and the estimate was updated to eight, and then eleven. eleven. more than a minyan. a whole community. enough people to carry out all of our holiest acts. all of our power is in our communities, unified and not uniform, unique individuals coming together for something greater. here was an entire community, made of all the greeters and page-callers and oneg-setters we all know from our own communities, and now it’s gone. (and yes, before we knew who was killed, i did wonder if those eleven murdered did indeed constitute a minyan. after all, the count could have included children).
they tried to kill us, they failed, let’s eat! or, for some of our holidays: they tried to kill us, they succeeded, let’s fast! they succeeded, but. i had 32 people and one puppy over at the apartment on sunday for a (previously scheduled) brunch. we ate so much food – bagels and lox and babka and shakshuka and challah french toast. we are still alive. we will always be alive. they cannot kill us. (they kill us, anyway.) we eat. i know, i know – we will outlive them.
there’s no point to any of this. eleven people are dead, because of hate and guns, and in kentucky, two more people are dead, because of hate and guns, and there are people dying everywhere, every day, because of hate and guns, and i’m so tired, and i can’t feel any of it anymore.
i don’t know how it’s possible, but the one thing that gives me any comfort at all is the motivation of the killer – that the last straw for him was my people’s deeply held value of welcoming and providing comfort and shelter to all strangers. the value was lived and enacted by the incredible work of HIAS, and i see it enacted constantly in the lives of my friends and family. i love that this is who we are. i love being jewish.
my heart is with every space where we gather, and every space where I have gathered to be Jewish: in every mezuzah I have kissed, in every chair in the synagogue where I grew up, in every apartment where I have davened with my independent minyanim, in every shabbas flame I have drawn close to me and my community, in every act of loving kindness I have witnessed because that is who we can be.

what she means: wakandan scientists probably invented faster-than-light travel many, many years ago, and have an entire nasa-like division of astronauts dedicated to exploring the universe. each of their spaceships has multiple andorid assistants, all specially designed to thrive in the unknown environments they might find. on wakanda, of course, all sentient beings are granted full rights, and the androids are enthusiastic and equal participants in these incredible space adventures. one of these androids is, obviously, cindi mayweather.
cindi’s ship lands on (asgard? please help i have not seen this movie just the tessa thompson gifs god she’s so hot), and their captain (Space Okoye) initiates diplomatic first contact protocols with (whomever the fuck is running that planet now, i assume still idris elba). the rest of the crew is granted shore leave, though sternly reminded to be on their best behavior.
cindi’s in need of a recharge for her low batteries, but doesn’t want to waste any time tethered to her ship when she could be OUT EXPLORING THIS INCREDIBLE NEW WORLD!! so she and some of the other androids are out trying get some energy, and, anyway, they’re attacked somehow, oh no! but they’re miraculously saved by a mysterious warrior woman (spoiler: it’s tessa thompson!!!) who has ~~forgotten how to love~~ but then she sees cindi and she’s the most beautiful being the famous valkyrie tessa thompson (seriously, does she have a name, do i have to watch this movie?) has ever beheld! and even though some people still think androids can’t feel emotions they teach/remind each other how to love!!! and fight bad guys who are thinly veiled metaphors for the evils of white supremacy, especially wrt colonizing indigenous narratives! and put each other’s faces ALL OVER each other’s vaginas, the end
a thought, to tide us all over in these godforsaken awful times:
leslie jones is exactly 6 feet tall, and allison janey is exactly 6 feet tall, and maybe one day they will be cast in a comedy together, and they will kiss, and their mouths will be perfectly aligned with each others’, and everyone will gaze upon that instead of our dumpster fire world, and then they will lean their foreheads against each other, and allison would make a perfectly kind and perfectly timed joke, and leslie would respond with an even kinder and more well-timed joke, and then, holding hands, they put out all the dumpster fires in the world, and then wrap their long legs around each other and nothing will be terrible ever again.
AU!Prequel/Crossover mash-up thingy: After his arrest, Stacker Pentecost (known within The Block by his middle name ‘Moses’) has a choice - a long stay at one of Her Majesty’s Young Offender Institutions or four years at military school. Figuring he’d at least have a place to lay his head, Stacker chose military school. Not long after enrollment, Stacker was praised by his commanding officers for his quickly-learned talents, causing him to pursue a successful military career after graduation. When the first Kaiju attack occurs, he is reminded of the alien monsters of his past and quickly becomes part of the PPDC, first serving as a volunteer for the Jaeger Program and soon after becoming it’s liaison.
things from “wait for it” that would be even better if aaron burr was a lesbian
or, a few of the many reasons why hamilton should be performed with an all-female cast someday
everything about having a secret relationship with theodosia, for obvious reasons
“love doesn’t discriminate between the sinners and the saints”
“my grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher/ but there are things that the homilies and hymns won’t teach you” just try and tell me that’s not the anthem of every modern queer kid from a conservative christian family
ditto for everything about feeling the pressure to protect her parents’ legacy
if both hamilton and burr were women, you could totally add a level to their rivalry where burr is closeted and jealous of hamilton being out and dangerously, terrifyingly open. “hamilton doesn’t hesitate, he exhibits no restraint, he takes and he takes and he takes"
basically: the whole song, and also the whole show
i rly love how people are still making modern interpretations of pretty ancient jewish liturgy. i mean, take this one: some cool dude - not even jewish! - took dayenu, a thousand-year-old passover song about our redemption, and translated it to english and made it relevant for the here and now.
like, any jew would listen to this and be automatically understand that you should sing this at passover. it’s definitely dayenu. (DEFINITELY. DAYENU.) but it’s for now. what a time to be alive.
