Your character awakes at dawn. The pale pink and tangerine fingers of dawn are just creeping over the horizon, and the stars are winking sleepily at the coming day. The air is crisp and cool. The calling of crepuscular birds are the soundtrack of the day.
What is your character's routine? What are they thinking about?
Since you wrote it in such a descriptive way, I might write a mini story in this case. Let's go for Colin cause he deserves some shine.
Glimpses of early morning light found Colin's face. Unable to turn away, he gets up to find most of his roommates fast asleep. Despite his grumbling he was used to waking up at dawn almost every morning except Sunday as even the 'Lord rested then' as his grandpa would say. Silently, he slipped on his boots and overcoat over his nightwear sneaking out of the Hufflepuff common room.
Every morning, Colin would routinely help feed the creatures for care of magical creatures classes. His professor gave him permission to do so under strict supervision. Other duties included cleaning manure and replenishing water with fresh from the Black lake. Then he usually stuck around and played the kneazles, crups, pigmy puffs and his favourite mooncalves until it was time to chnage and head to his first lesson.
Truth be told, Colin despised school. He would much rather be outside and interacted with the different creatures. He was just tolerating until he could graduate and pursue his dream in working with magical creatures. Any job would suffice as long as he can work closely with these magnificent creatures. Unlike people, they don't judge nor are they intentionally mean.
Though he always afraid to say his dream out loud. In fear of someone telling why he cannot, of too many obligations and financial reality. It was just a fun dream he liked to drift into instead.
In 1939, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, the Air Ministry began an extensive programme of disguising industrial buildings, typically with images of the suburbs. Colin Moss was employed on this programme and was transferred to the Ministry of Home Security's Camouflage Directorate at Leamington Spa at the outbreak of war. Along with other artists, he was given a months leave to record his designs, in this case Stonebridge Park Power Station near Wembley.
I hadn't thought about the idea of camouflaging infrastructure, but it makes sense. I'm also glad that the powers that be gave the artists time to capture the images of what would otherwise almost certainly be completely forgotten.
The power station, by the way, was coal-fired, and powered the London and North Western Railway and its successors, up to and including British Rail. It closed in 1967 and has since been demolished.
Tell me whatever you wanna share about wth is going on "underneath the greenhouse,"please? <3
Thanks for the ask. It's my origin story for Eulin, an underappreciated ship caused by me. Also the one series of stories that has the most chapters written so far. It's also starts the earliest in the chronology I have for the AHoS. It's a whole lovely organised mess.
Also the first where I included some characters from the Hogwarts Legacy game despite never have played it XD. It's also to help explore their personalities and character growth since I do deem them as my quietest and perhaps less problamatic characters but throughout it they have grown and opened up their personalities a lot more both in expected and unexpected ways and taken me somewhere I hadn't really planned for. There is a lot of work I need to put into it but that's for any of my stories.
Warnings: mention of social anxiety, carnivorous plants.
"Colin?" Albert Burke Wyevernbush, his best friend, nudged him.
"What?" He whispered back, taking a quick check that professor Binns was too busy occupied by goblin rebellions. Colin heard enough tales about them from fellow Goblins from the recent rebellion in 1890.
"Winona has been staring at you again. Do you think she knows?" Albert proffered. Colin sheepishly glanced over at them from desks that the Gryffindor girl occupied with her friend. The girl quickly turned her head around, caught in the act.
Albert may be very well right. Colin did have the inkling that Winona was onto him, the increasing stares at him. At first, he wants to be sure that he is being paranoid, but Albert may have confirmed his worst fear. Particularly from Winona Rosewood and, last night Lysander, his Hufflepuff dormmate. Colin woke up in the night feeling Lysander's blue gaze right through, exactly like back in second year.
It made Colin wrought with worry and anxiety. Numerous times, his heart palpitated rapidly as he felt them getting closer to the truth, especially from Lysander. No, maybe they already knew the truth after all; everyone knew that the cousins were as thick as thieves.
"I dare hope not, Bertie," Colin muttered under his breath, only loud enough for Albert to hear.
At lunch, he and Albert hid in the Herbology greenhouses. While the fanged geraniums don't make the most pleasant of companies, it is undoubtedly more comfortable than the eyes of the students at the great hall. Professor MacMillan had been kind enough to let them as long as they helped with watering and caring for the plants.
Knocks rapped on the glass door.
"Hello?" A head peaked out.
The curious eyes of the Gryffindor girl wandered around the exotic plants reserved for the more advanced students before meeting his matching eyes.
"Hello, Colin. I was wondering if we could converse on a private matter." Her eyes glanced over to Albert.
"Um...you can say whatever you have to say to me in front of Bertie. I hold no secrets from him."
"Alright then," Winona murmured as she narrowly avoided getting bitten by the carnivorous plant. She sat neatly down on the stool. "So, I don't know how to say this..."
She paused, carefully considering her following words. Bertie edged on his seat with suspense, staring between the two.
"So, I have discovered of recent..." She fiddled with her thumbs. Colin held his breath. Will she say it, or will she not? "That my father had a child out of wedlock."
Her hazel eyes studied Colin's face to see his reaction. He hoped that he was not coming across as unfavourable.
"That child was you, Colin." Her lips seemed to purse tightly. She seemed nervous, not what Colin had expected.
"Aye, I ken." Colin finally showed a small smile.
Winona stared at him in disbelief. "You already knew? Wait, for how long? Why did you never say anything?"
"I knew for the entire time," Colin answered, fiddling with his fingers. "Ma told me about ma father but always told me to keep ma mouth shut. Especially at Hogwarts."
"Well, now that we both know, it's so good to have another brother," Winona spoke with excitement.
"I guess it's nice to have a sister," Colin already warmed up to the idea. He knew he was going against his mother's wishes; however, in his defence, Winona, his sister who he can now call her, was the one to approach him.
"And another brother too." He added, referring to Glenn Rosewood. Though Colin always found the older Gryffindor as an imitating force. Constantly berating and taking points from anyone in line.
The Gryffindor girl's brows furrowed in. "Another brother?"
Colin pointed to Bertie, half excited and half worried for him. "He's not my brother by blood, but I consider him one. This is Albert Burke."
Albert gave a slight wave to Winona.
"Hello," he said quietly.
"Hello, it's a pleasure to meet you," Winona replied warmly. "I don't think I have seen you around before, Albert."
"You can call me Bertie, and no I don't believe we have met properly."
"Well, it's lovely making your acquaintance, Bertie." Colin felt his smile creep up as Bertie blushed brightly when Winona used his nickname. They didn't have many friends, and while Colin was comfortable with his small circle, he knew Bertie wanted to expand his friendship circle a little more.
"Rosewood. Winona, I mean?" Colin clarified. His mouth felt weird, and being on a first-name basis with his sister was strange.
"Yes, Colin?"
"Does your brother...I mean our brother know?"
"No."
"Lysander?"
Winona only nodded her head, laughing a little. "Was my dear cousin that obvious?"
"Yes." Colin sounded a little grumpy. "He better not going and tell everyone about our blood ties."
"Don't worry, he is my best secret keeper. Well, we didn't perform the actual curse however he keeps all my secret as I do for him." Winona corrected herself.
The bell rang, and Colin could hear some students gathering outside.
"You better leave before anyone...you know."
"Right, cause men and women can be left alone." She scoffed but was ready to leave with a smile. "I'll see you both around."
"Yeah...see you around," Colin awkwardly waved.
"Be careful of the-" Bertie warned, yet it was too late.
"Merlin's beard! Get off of me!"
"Fanged geraniums..."
Bertie faded out. Winona was in a tug-of-war with the carnivorous plant. Colin and Bertie rushed to help and pulled her arm away, but the red plant held a chunk of fabric between their teeth.
Winona looked horrified at the shredded robe before letting out a peal of loud laughter. Colin was hesitant at first, wondering if she was hurt but slowly joined in the absurdity. Bertie followed, laughing at the fanged geraniums, who, in turn, Colin mused, must be looking back at them confused but he didn't care. He had gained a sister that day.
Summer 1895: Colin is working at his grandfather's pub and he quickly realises that he might need to step up sooner rather than later.
Character featured: Mortimer Fraser @lifeofkaze.
Warnings: mentions of illness, child working at a pub.
The chatter of the customers filled the lively atmosphere of the pub at the edge of the cliff. Unfortunately, for legal reasons, Colin's grandfather Rabbie and his friend, Craig Doughlas, had to build it technically off the land. However, today it was all hands on deck, especially since his grandfather's partner was off ill with dragon pox. This summer, Rabbie decided it was time for Colin to learn how to man the bar. Previous summers had been filled with mopping the floor and carrying many crates. It was to toughen Colin up; at least, it was what his grandfather said though Colin had many doubts about it.
The door opened, and a man unabashedly wearing a bright suit entered. He carried himself with flamboyance. Mortimer Fraser was one of a kind, like everyone else at the pub.
"Alright Mortimer," the elderly man doffed his cap at the colourful younger man.
"Alright, Rabbie," Mortimer Fraser greeted back with the same respect. He nicked his head at the young lad. "Alright, Colin, hope your grandfather is not making you work too hard?"
Colin just nodded but carried on his job of cleaning the beer glasses. The boy hid his face, and he found it overwhelming, constantly being stared at while wishing for the ground to pull him down and hide forever.
His grandfather and Mortimer bantered about who was more proud of their grandson or niece. Usually, the conversation concludes with a business deal. The Frasers' whiskey has become a stapler at the Naughty Cliffs. Colin had once had a sip but found himself choking on the spiciness of the firewhiskey while the regulars laughed. Colin had never felt such humiliation in his life.
"Oi Colin!"
Colin turned around to see it was John Campbell. A regular and perhaps his grandfather's most loyal customer. He always sat at the bar to the corner to the left. His face was mauled, a scar covered the right side from a werewolf claw, and his nose stood crooked from being punched too many times. John scared Colin when he was a wee boy, but he realised quickly that he had a big soft heart. After a time, John slowly started to fill the shoes of a father figure. While neither ever expected it, it was embraced by both parties.
"Geez another round would you?"
"The usual?" Colin already knew John wanted his usual brand of scotch.
"Be kind tae the lad," his mother jokingly whacked John's arm. She was carrying the drinks and food from customer to customer. "You had enough tae drink."
"Come on, Dottie." He rolled his pale eyes playfully. "Another won't harm me or you. I'm bringing money tae, yer family."
It wasn't a lie, though. John had been more than generous to the Mosses despite barely affording anything for himself.
"How was work at the leaky cauldron?" His mother asked in a low voice. John always had difficulty maintaining jobs; his current job was as a dishwasher at the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley.
John sighed, looking wearier than ever. "Had tae leave and almost got outed by a colleague."
His mother looked concerned. Colin handed over the scotch to John though he was never sure what John's relationship was with his mother. He had enquired about it once when he mustered enough courage, but his mother said they were just friends.
"Don't worry, Dottie. I managed tae find work at a broom factory." He assured her. A loud bang echoed through the pub while glass clattered.
"Colin!"
"Yes, Grandpa?"
Colin rushed over to the entrance, his grandfather hunched over spluttering. Mortimer had brought more supplies and offered to help, but knowing his grandpa, his pride wouldn't let him. In the past, his grandfather would have used his wand; however, shamefully, Colin returned it broken. His grandfather lent his wand when Copin started his education at Hogwarts. He felt so proud and terrified to use the magnificent though tired wand. Unfortunately, some older boys grabbed him and snapped the pear wood wand.
Colin almost cried, handing over the broken pieces to his grandfather. Though the unicorn hairstring barely held it together, his grandfather comforted and assured him they could quickly fix it with a bandage. They managed to gather enough money for Colin to get a brand new wand though he still felt shame over the incident.
His grandpa was hunched over with a crate of firewhiskey, letting out a series of heavy coughs.
"Are you alright, Grandpa?" Colin tried to help his hunched grandpa and spluttered out a series of coughs.
"I'm good, Colin."
"You don't sound so good."
"The lad is right," Mortimer rushed over as he witnessed the commotion. "Do you want to go to St Mungo to get it checked out."
"No, no. I'm good." He refuted the offer.
"Are you sure?" Mortimer pressed on.
"Mr Fraser is right, Grandpa. Me and Ma can man the place. You taught me so." Colin pleaded; it's not like a trip to St Mungo would cost them anything except his grandpa's pride.
"I'll be fine." He swatted away the gathering crowd. Mortimer looked at Colin with still concern, but Colin shyly shrugged back.
"At least let me carry this," his grandfather was preparing to refuse. Still, Colin decided to assert himself and lifted the crate to the backroom. Mortimer left their establishment though he did ask one last time if Rabbie was sure he was feeling well. Though he did agree to allow Colin, to do more at the bar. He did feel a little more confident about tending the bar. However, he couldn't help but worry about his grandfather's health, especially when he was away at Hogwarts the next month.
