You wake up, get ready, go to school, go to practice, go to work, spend some much needed time with your friends, and then you’re supposed to write a college essay?!?! We know, we get it. It can be difficult to not only find time to write your college essay, but use that time efficiently. So our Founder and Chief Advisor, Stacey Brook, put together these tips to help you get your college application ready to submit in no time!

I’ve spent the past year going through the college application process, and now that I’m on the other side of it I thought it would be cool to share what I’ve learned! So this is the first post in what will be a series on how to apply to college and get ready for college once you’ve been accepted.

There’s a lot of different terms thrown around about application deadlines, and it can be hard to sort through all of them. Here’s a short description of the main ones to help you on out! (To figure out the specific dates for schools you're looking at, check out the application/admissions page on the school's website) 

Regular (AKA RD or Regular Decision)

This is the easiest one to understand because it’s the most straightforward; it's the deadline to submit your application. 

After the regular decision deadline, the school will sort through all of the applications and choose who will be accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. 

In the US, the regular deadline is typically around January 1, but the date may be earlier or later depending on the school.

Early Decision (AKA ED)

ED and EA are the ones people tend to get confused about!

ED is an earlier application deadline, anywhere from September to November

ED is a commitment. If you send in an application early decision, you must go to the school if you get in. If you aren’t 100% sure about going to a school, don’t apply ED!

Early Action (AKA EA)

EA is also an earlier application deadline

it’s a no-strings-attached arrangement, so you aren't required to go to a school you get into through an EA application

You’re showing interest, and some say you are more likely to get in if you apply early, but my general impression has been that there isn't a huge difference in admissions percentages btwn EA and RD

Rolling (AKA Rolling Deadline or Decision)

A rolling decision or deadline means that they will accept your application through a certain date and review applications as they come in.

The earlier you submit your application, the more likely you are to get in simply because they will have more spaces open.

Sometimes, schools will have a rolling deadline after their regular decision deadline in order to fill up their class (more common at smaller colleges and universities in my experience).

Priority Deadline (AKA Scholarship Deadline)

This one is often left off of lists, but can be really important!

A priority deadline is the date by which you have to submit your application if you want to be considered for special programs or scholarships

Not all schools have a priority deadline for merit scholarships, but it is absolutely worth checking the website and even emailing the admissions office to make sure.

In order to afford my second choice school, I would have had to get some hefty scholarships. I was initially planning on applying in December, until I visited the college and the admissions officer offhandedly mentioned that the deadline for the school’s biggest merit scholarships was November 15 - which was a week away! I had to rush to get all my application essays and recommendations together. yikes.

Bonus: Responses from the school (other than “accepted” or “denied”)

Deferred

If you apply EA/ED and the school isn’t sure they want to admit you but also isn’t sure they don’t, they may defer your application. What this means is that they will take another look once the regular deadline rolls around to review your application in the context of the majority of the applications.

While this isn’t a rejection, be sure you to finish your other applications

Waitlist(ed)

To be put on the waitlist means that they think you’re good, but they don’t have enough space to admit you. Depending on how many people accept the offer of admissions from the school, you may be pulled off the waitlist and be accepted.

When you are notified that you’ve been waitlisted, you are supposed to choose whether you want to be put on the actual wait list or if you don’t. Unless you decide to be on the waitlist, there is no chance of actually being accepted to the school.

FAFSA advice

Please, please, please do your taxes before you turn in your FAFSA. Technically, if things are going badly for you, you can fill out the FAFSA with last year’s tax information, but you just have to update it once this year’s taxes are done.

For those of you who have a job: this means you need to file taxes as soon as possible, because deadlines are coming up.

For those of you still living with your parents or who count as a dependent on your parental tax form(s): you need to have your parents file their taxes as soon as possible.

Deadlines are coming up for all sorts of colleges and universities. Check your individual guidelines to see what you have to deal with specifically. 

Remember, the money FAFSA can get you IS first-come-first serve. You have a better chance of getting money if you file the FAFSA early.

So please do your taxes.
