Collogruis

[Sometimes I really wish I could read Latin. Aldrovandi’s History of Monsters has never been translated into English. The crane-man here seems to have had a long afterlife, ending up inspiring the “Bowman of Madagascar” and the “Monstrous Tartar”. Both of those versions are armed with bows and arrows, so I gave this version one as well.]
Collogruis CR 3 LE Monstrous Humanoid This well-dressed humanoid has a long, flexible neck and a beak protruding from his face where his jaws should be.
The collogruis, sometimes called “cranefolk”, are covetous humanoids native to distant lands. They are organized and greedy, and their society is devoted to the acquisition of wealth above all other things. Some pursue this through trade, others through raiding, still others as mercenaries and monster slayers. For some obscure reason, they despise griffons and will go out of their way to kill them whenever possible.
All collogruis train with bows from an early age, and most of them value a mix of ranged and melee combat to strike down their enemies. They are excellent dowsers and treasure hunters, and they may hire their powers out to miners or nobles in search of resources. Those dealing with a collogruis, however, are best to be on their guard. Few collogruis are anything other than wicked, and they will gladly betray their allies or employers in the pursuit of lucre.
