Once again, we're seeing Luffy taking a very tough love approach with the giant kids like with Momo and Shirahoshi, which no doubt he picked up from Ace.
Although I wonder if the kids and Collon mutually disliking each other due to Collon's adherence to Elbaf's warrior ways which Luffy embraces with open stretchy arms is almost a sneak peek as to what Luffy's early life might have been like.
There had to have been at least a few other kids in Foosha Village, so maybe Luffy had trouble making friends because his scrappy energy and hunger for adventure (hunger in general, really) was too much for them to handle. They thought he was a rowdy troublemaker and Luffy thought they were weaklings, which contributed to his loneliness.
I will say that for how much he idolizes the warriors of Elbaf, Usopp has a very mature take on this shift in their culture.
He knows first-hand how scary constant battles can be and he grew up in a peaceful village, so Usopp can understand the desire for a quiet life even if it's not one he particularly wants for himself.
After all, Collon does seem a little concerningly eager to take part in warfare and given that he's supposed to be a parallel to young Luffy, I doubt he understands the horrors of what war actually brings.
I'm certain a compromise is going to be reached by the end of Elbaf where Collon learns that aspiring to live peacefully isn't a sign of weakness and the younger generations of giants will learn when it's time to step up and fight to protect yourself.
Hehe, this is such a cute scene you forget it's absolute bedlam up above. The gang with Loki are tending to the giant's wounds, Luffy is trying to help, he makes things worse. Classic. But then he gets this cheeky lil thumbs up from Gerd for his efforts which makes it all so much better.
We'll get to the main concept from this part of the chapter in a moment but for now I just want to comment on how weird it is in the grand scheme of things. Elbaf has really shown itself to be a stranger One Piece arc in terms of story structure. We're on an island we've long awaited and have friendly relations established before getting there. Everything is going crazy in the boughs above due to interlopers in God's Knights. Meanwhile Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and for the first time since Dressrosa a Grand Fleet crew are down below...having the normal stuff for a One Piece arc. Unpacking someone with dubious motives and connections to the wider world.
Look, just because you like Fleetwood Mac doesn't mean you're some old soul who's smarter and more evolved than everyone around you. Your parents just had a few winners in their era, it's easy for the old days to sound good when they're winnowed down to the greatest hits. The 70s also had to put up with Air Supply...
Sorry, tangent. Once again, I am having trouble understanding why so many people are just deadset on the idea Loki is secretly this unequivocally good guy. Idolizing Rocks just adds to the pile of things that make me think the point here is that an affable villain throws a big curveball at Luffy's usual MO meeting the island's designated weirdo. Especially when he have such a good weirdo up above!
Onward Colon Pirates! We get back up above and see a lot of things that could be summed up as people getting a hand on the situation. Especially Oyabun coming in clutch putting out the fires! I love how Jinbei casually changes the _____ Current Shoulder Throw if he's using a different liquid. Cloud isn't as funny as Tea Current but it's always nice to see.
But this is where it gets interesting. We also have our other mystery figure in the arc. Like Loki, we've taken the time to introduce shades of gray with Gunko. We know so much about how the WG operates now through Caramel's story it's entirely possible Gunko's someone who had little choice in life. It'd certainly track with her power. There's a reason we take time to humanize her before jumping into what we have now. Which is also interesting because Brook is here, how Gunko going to react to that?
Regardless of any direct connection, to me this is exactly what the subtleties around Kiku & Yamato were all about. And it feels like this chapter is really setting it up right now both above and below. People are complex, you don't always know what they really want. You never know what hidden sides there are. If Gunko starts fangirling and seeming like an ally, can we really trust that? I wouldn't put it past our pied piper to be persuasive and a distraction is all you need here. Loki's still teetering in that space between trustworthy and not. Whichever way that breaks I feel like we'll see it in the next batch of chapters, but sadly we'll have to wait an extra week for that.
