A quick little set of color thumbnails! For this particular batch I didn’t have a tablet available, so I just used my mouse.
These fun little color doodles demonstrate a few good things to learn from. After feeling out what colors I wanted to use I made a point of making each character mostly one color within the palette, with accents of the other colors. Each character has a really nice definitive color mood because of this, but still harmonizes with the other characters because they are built within the same palette. Also note that hotter colors tend to pop forward (the red character in this case), and cooler colors fall back (the blue character); complimentary combinations (the two left characters) also tend to pop out a bit more, while the analogous character (right) falls back. This is situational, of course: if I had a scene of twenty red characters, the analogous blue guy on the right would end up being the one that stands out!
Anyways, I’ve got a few good posts lined up! You’ll see how to take one of these thumbnails forward, and a comparison set of thumbnails done with a tablet--both tools have their advantages!
