An advertisement from the 1960's for Nadinola's skin lightening cream (which is still sold) appeared in Ebony Magazine. Though in America such lightening products are now taboo to advertise for in major magazines this image and idea that women of color need to be lighter in order to appear attractive to the opposite sex still persists for many.
In other countries: the Philippines, India, Nigeria, lightening creams are sold far more openly. In fact in the Philippines it is difficult to buy lotion or soap that is not a skin lightening product.
