"I wanna be where the people are." -Me, every day of quarantine -Also, Ariel I saw my niece and nephew today for the first time since quarantine, and my nephew didn't even notice the mermaid tails on the back of my shirt when he told me, "Auntie Chrissy, you're a mermaid!" Halle Bailey is #myariel @frosinfantasyland via @colormemagic asked me to participate in this #colormemermaid project so I decided to do a disneybound! The Little Mermaid is one of my favorites and I am so happy that Halle was cast as Ariel! Growing up I loved Ariel and seeing someone like Halle is everything I’ve dreamed of. I never thought I could dress like her because I wasn’t white. I’d seen the hurtful and hateful comments towards people of color cosplaying white characters. I was a child when the movie came out and wasn’t until I was well into adulthood and through Disneybounding and the welcoming community that I finally got the courage to cosplay her. My nieces and nephew get to grow up with representation and characters that are the same as them and/or look like them! Right now they have T’Challa and Miles Morales (they’re also Puerto Rican and Black!) and adding Ariel is amazing! They’ll hopefully never have the same feelings or thoughts I did growing up never seeing anyone that looked like me. Representation really does matter. Would I like more, original characters that are POC? Yes of course and hopefully this leads to that. When @colormemagic asked me to participate in the #colormemermaid project rooting for @chloexhalle as the new Ariel, I was super excited because this is a topic I feel strongly about and Courtney is a voice in this Insta community that inspires me. So let's talk about inspiration.  🧜🏼‍♀️ The Little Mermaid came out when I was six years old. I remember singing "Part of Your World" on the playground with the other little girls in my first grade class and dreaming of being part of Ariel's world. She was the first Disney Princess of my generation. She was bold. She was fearless. She was brave. She inspired me.  🧜🏽‍♂️ That's the beautiful thing about storytelling. It can inspire us. It can influence us to look outside appearances and stigmas and to dream. Disney storytelling is among my favorite in all the land, and when they do something or change something, it's with intention. The original Ariel isn't being replaced. We are gaining a new version to inspire a new generation. 🧜🏿‍♀️ I didn't think Aladdin could be improved upon, but when they changed Jasmine's story, I was in absolute awe. She became a bigger inspiration to me.  🧜‍♂️ I am so here for Halle Bailey as #myariel and I can't wait to see how @Disney tells her story. She's got an incredible voice and she is already motivating young women and girls around the world to follow their dreams.
