The second here in the series is presented a bit differently, the departure is more to illustrated the difference, an exploration of the process, no swiping to see the source images. Fractured diatom. Seekonk river series, boathouse collection. This is the first in the series. Before this series I'd only looked at diatoms on other small shells or in biofilms on aquatic plants. This collection was simply walking down to the waters edge with an applicator stick and a 50ml conical tube. Scraping a rock with the stick and catching the bulk of the floating cloud of debris in the tube and imaging it. This first series I took 15ml of the collection water/fluid, post settling, and then filtered it with a 0.22um filter, air-dried then coated with 14nm of Au. Perhaps you caught a bit of the stories posted, this is the begining of looking at the crude collection. Motivated by ways to teach not just imaging but collecting and examining the unseen around us. Mantis, strike a pose! I did a bit of experimenting with the detectors on Monday with some degree of success. This is an image made up from two separate modes of the ETD. One in pure backscatter (-250V) and one in standard (normal) secondary mode (+250V). It isn't possible to collect the images at the same time but it was still a bit of fun to experiment both with a bit of tilt, some working distance changes and using this capacity of the Apreo. I've been asked about the color. How do I 'paint' with the colors. For the color images I always start out with two or three #blackandwhite images from different detectors/types of electrons, and as you can see in most of the color postings i've included the raw images to show where the color is coming from. Then I assign colors, playing with the RGB values a bit, the percent contribution to the final mix of each image, and well that's it. The blue green here just felt right with this low mag full view of the baby mantis. Perhaps you saw the IG story on Monday?
