From Atmosphere to the Colour Punch
About 12 pm, my alarm went off – I had to work at 3, and I needed to get ready. I fumbled for my phone so I could do something about the infernal noise that was preventing me from sleeping. I stumbled out of bed, and searched for my towel; I needed a shower! My hands were green, my chest was red, and my arms were yellow. My feet and fingernails were a blackish purple, and I was hung-over. I went to the bathroom and turned on the water. As paint turned my floor into something that look like a murder scene of a rainbow and the water was cleansing me, the memories came pouring over me.
What a night it had been! Actually, both Friday and Saturday had been something else… Friday, I got dressed to the nines and met up with Ryan, Leena, and Ling Li in Guo Mao. I had convinced them to come to Atmosphere with me because I needed a posh night out. I arrived first, and I ordered a Tanqueray No. 10 while I awaited my friends. I didn’t mind waiting a bit because I was enjoying the view from the 80th floor on a clear night (two things that rarely collide on a Friday night out).
My friends started appearing soon enough, and we were having a great time. However, we had not booked a table, so we were sat at a large we shared with others, and it wasn’t by the window. Also, Ryan had not known that Atmosphere had a dress code, and since he had come straight from work, he was wearing shorts – they had given him a pair of black sweatpants to wear in order to be let in; no short in Atmosphere! Then a fuwuyuan came over and told us that we were being moved to a smaller table by the window (of course we willingly agreed) because the people there were suddenly joined by some of their friends and their table was now too small. We were happy with the up-grade, and the others ordered their fancy drinks as well. I was really enjoying myself; I mean it’s not all that often that I’m being as posh as I’d like to; I’m a rather posh girl, but it often seems like I’m sitting in a sleazy bar somewhere instead of doing stuff like this.
Okay, we were not being too posh; after all, we are mere commoners, and we found ourselves talking very explicitly about our various sex lives. Don’t get me wrong; it was a very interesting conversation, but it was just not the kind of conversation you have 80 kuai drinks…
Eventually, we slopped down a bit and went to San Li Tun where we could dance and act up. Still, I had really enjoyed being posh for a change, and I will tell you this much; if you ever visit Beijing, you should go to Atmosphere if you are lucky enough to be here on a clear night. I mean, Beijing does not have an actual skyline, but Guo Mao is pretty at night, and if you are sitting in Beijing’s tallest building, it’s all the more enjoyable!
I didn’t go home too late, though – I was feeling tired, and I wanted to be well-rested for Saturday.
Saturday, I woke up, I got dressed in some old clothes, and eventually I went to Liang Ma Qiao where I was supposed to meet my friends for the Beijing Colour Punch. I felt nothing like my usual self and nothing like I had the night before; I was in flats, a white top, and white leggings – far from the stylish girl I normally try to be. When my friends started appearing, we went in, and we got some paint. Everyone received a small plastic bag of powdered paint. We started throwing it at each other, and we soon got really dirty. I was loving it! I have never been that dirty in my life, and it felt so good – I didn’t have to care what anyone thought of me; everyone was getting really dirty, and it was just so much fun.
At one point, the powder just didn’t cut it, so we filled a bottle with water and paint, mixed it, poked a hole in the top, and then I started targeting random people who were not (in my opinion) colourful enough… The thing is everyone genuinely appreciated it when I snuck up on them and sprayed them with red paint. More than a few times, friends of my victims said; “niiice” when I had just gotten their friend. I got high-fives and hugs all night; keep in mind – I was covered in paint myself, and, therefore, I was a lot of fun to hug - especially when newcomers came, they wanted to partake sooner rather than later.
Speaking of the newcomers… there was a queue to get in, and it grew rather long. Everyone was waiting in their clean outfits outside the actual party, and this to me seemed like an opportunity. I filled my bottle with a fresh ration of red paint, and then I went out to the people who were waiting. I ran along the line whilst spraying paint. Oh my! That was so much fun – the best part was that everyone said ‘thank you’ and more people wanted to hug me.
My exterior changed a lot over the night; first I was all white – then it was that funny look with handprints on my arse and boobs. Later, I look like a predator that had just killed and eaten a prey. Eventually, I was told I looked like either the last survivor from a horror film or Tomb Raider.
It was a bit sad that the party ended as soon as it did; it was simply a great event! However, we were not ready to go home, so we got on the subway (oh yes! People stared…) and went to San Li Tun (that is usually what happens if you’re out and you don’t know where to go…). We went to Kai Bar and Kokomo’s where we danced and had lots of fun. People were also eating streetfood at one point and I kept making new friends because we all knew who had gone the party and who had not (it was very obvious).
Eventually, we called it a night, and after having had one of my best weekends in Beijing so far, I went to bed. My nails are still full of paint, and facebook is overflowing with pictures from Saturday. I have said it before, and I’ll say it again – you never know what happens in Beijing!
