The editorial team here at FRR - having come of age many moons ago during the advent of the original AmRep/T&G era, when so many distinct heavies were carving rusty exhaust pipes in their own image only to succumb to the trappings of careerist plateauing not many years later - could not be more pleased these days to revel in the personalized noisy rock feast available to our 2016 ears. While we're quite fond of Austin's Coma In Algiers, they only put out records with the frequency of cicadas, so best not to hold your breathe and rather, gaze unto the current horizon: Meet Your Death, Multicult, bbigpigg, MUSK, Dead Tenants, Sediment Club, Nag, the Wilful Boys, Degreaser, Stella, Running, Utah Jazz, Nameless Frames, Honey, Empty Markets…we could go on. Luckily, Coma's Evan Kleinecke mastered CSSS’s squalor into a cool whip with his exact-o spatula, drawing out the tuneful burnt ends of the band’s racket. What sound like bottle slide incisions within a thudding lurch give way to a headlong rictus curdle; “Smoke” into “Turning Gears” is one of the best one-two punches of the year. “Who do you think we are?” We think you’re Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes and your record is pretty fuckin’ great. Super Secret Records is really A+++ this year. No doubt this is the kind of stuff @goodbysunball is up at night thinking about.

Leipzig by Coma in Algiers Coma In Algiers kept me at least a little clued-in to great noisy Austin bands during a roughly five-year period where I wasn’t in active bands and was focusing more on my day job and growing family. One of my old bands used to play with them before they released their first album in 2007, and they were always such a strikingly literate and thoughtful bunch of miscreants that I couldn’t help but fall for the band, and I became friends with everybody in it. I missed a lot of shows, but when I did get out it was always exciting to see them getting more intense and creative, rarely playing songs older than a year. Four albums later, Coma is releasing Happy Forever at Cheer Up Charlies with Ringo Deathstarr, James Arthur’s Manhunt, Popper Burns and Air Traffic Controllers tonight, and this track is possibly the best thing they’ve done yet, hypnotic and pummelling.
