I dont mean to spam ur blog w rants and opinions but imho its not the obsession w the ship thats a problem its the fact that thats the only card they play now (and the fact that improving upon and being completely separate from the source material is now something we've walked away from entirely but thats a discussion for another time)
I love seeing opinions so it’s totally ok! Anyway, I completely agree. The keyword I think is ‘balance’. I’m cool with the ship but it started irking me in season two when it felt like everything else was being pushed aside for its sake. For example, the trivializing and de-emphasis of Hannibal’s relationship with Alana, and to a lesser extent, Jack. It was a battle to try to convince people that he had genuine affection for them, too, partly because everyone only wanted to see the Hannibal/Will, which imo was a consequence of the writing. It would’ve been great if there was some breathing room for elements other than that one big ship, you know?
that’s why I enjoyed s1 the most. There was development for Hannibal and Alana, Hannibal and Abigail, Hannibal and the Crawfords, Hannibal and Bedelia… not to mention Will/Alana, Will/Abigail, Alana/Abigail, Jack/Will, etc. There was so much more variety in the interactions. Not everything had to be about Hannibal/Will, even though it was clearly the driving force behind the season.
