I've always loved poster art, but recently this love has been rekindled, particularly by the new Julianna Barwick poster by Comet Substance for Ballroom Marfa (check out this post on the Ballroom blog, showing the printing of the amazing work).

So, i've decided to occasionally feature artists who are making great posters, and what better way than to start with Ronny Hunger/Comet Substance, whose work has inspired me to fall down the gig poster rabbit-hole.

Comet Substance is the poster-making screen-printing alter ego of Swiss (naturally) graphic designer Ronny Hunger. Ronny mostly produces posters for local shows in Zürich and Luzern but he’s also done the odd piece for events further afield in Chicago and Barcelona. But we want to see his posters everywhere as his combination of found imagery, hacked graphic symbols and experimental type treatments are an absolute dream, perfectly symbolising the tendency for pinching sounds from all manner of musical genres practiced by the bands they promote.

Mixing images and graphics of everything from a guide showing one how-to properly put on her pantyhose to supermarket coupons to the American West and deserts, Hunger's work falls somewhere between the photocopied posters from the early days of punk to Baltimore artist Chris Day's jumbled screenprints. Somehow Hunger manages to make this cornucopia of Americana and insanity congeal into a messy, but united work that is not only eye-catching, but serves its purpose: getting the viewer excited about the show they are about to see.

The fact that Comet Substance so rarely makes posters for shows in the United States, makes it even more thrilling that Ballroom is getting an original for this show. As great as it is, I must admit, It will be a bit surreal to see one of Hunger's posters in the local saloon window next to a "horse parking" sign.
