“@people who haven’t read Captive Prince and are genuinely curious:”
it really is upsetting seeing all the negativity, like people are saying that fans of it are going to hell and that we're disgusting or not trustworthy and its so upsetting. i always try to be a good and nice person but all the negativity really gets me second guessing myself even when i know that enjoying a book doesn't mean you condone what happens in it yk
Yes, I know, it’s really frustrating.
I understand these books deal with a lot of difficult issues and can be off putting to some people. So when someone who did read all 3 books say they didn’t like it, there’s nothing I can say to that, because it’s their right to like or dislike something, I’m not here to convince people of my point of view or to try to make them change theirs.
What’s really upsetting is when people who haven’t read it start saying the most horrible things about the books. They read summaries or see fanarts and assume what happens, spreading misinformation and stating as facts things that are not true. The worst are the ones that attack people for liking the books based on those same misconceptions they probably picked up from someone else who also didn’t read the books.
Just because the series deal with certain content, doesn’t mean it’s romanticized or idealized. If people read the books they’ll understand all the things non-readers unknowingly complain about, such as abuse and rape, are being treated as the horrible things they are. No one is condoning what happens in the first book, but I do understand why it was written that way in order to portray the world and the characters of the story, it doesn’t mean I like it or wished I lived there.
