Convention going tips! (Comicpalooza)
I’ve been attending Comicpalooza for a few years and I’ve learned a few things that I think might be helpful to first-timers (and reminders for others).
Before anything else, get your tickets online and do early badge pickup - Seriously. There are so few reasons for you to wait until you are there to get a badge. Comicpalooza has been doing generous early badge pickup these past few weekends and will be having another early badge pickup at the Hilton next to the George R. Brown the Thursday before the con. GO. Print out your ticket, take it to the Hilton lobby, and get your beautiful badge. It could save you hours of wait time the day of and you can walk in as soon as the doors open.
Wear comfy shoes - Even if they don’t go with your outfit/cosplay. The concrete floor of the George R. Brown convention center is unforgiving. It somehow manages to be harder than any other concrete floor I’ve been on and can be slippery too. Avoid slipping and hurting yourself/ having to rest your feet every 10 minutes by wearing sneakers.
Be prepared to walk a lot - This year, Comicpalooza has over hours of programming, dealers and artists, and is 4 days of stuff to see and do. You’re going to have to walk. So much. Comicpalooza takes up most of the first floor of the George R. Brown and a good portion of the third floor as well. Coupled with limited nearby parking (due to dt Houston construction), you’ll probably end up walking a couple of miles a day at least.
Drink lots of water - This one is especially for people from out of town. It’s May in Houston. There will more than likely be 500% humidity and if you are outside for any length of time, you will be drenched by it. The last thing you’ll want is more moisture. Don’t make that mistake. Drink water. The swamp humidity is tricking you; it’s actually only 30% natural humidity, the rest is the sweat it has sapped out of Houston residents. Don’t let them swamp win.
If you get hurt/feel dizzy/ feel sick please go visit the Con Nurse - She’s very nice and helpful. The First Aid room is on the 3rd floor. Ask a volunteer for help getting there if necessary. Don’t try and tough it out or be embarrassed that you don’t feel well. Be safe!
Download the Comicpalooza App! - It’s very helpful and much better than last year. It contains the schedule, maps, and a myriad of other helpful info and services. You can even add events on your “to-do” list and it will remind you when they start! (put booth 1552 on your list)
This is just a basic reminder list- but I hope you found it helpful. If you have any questions, visit the website (or you can ask me). Hope to see you there!
