Steve is like the literal definition of “ Tries his best.”

He fucks up all the time, but there are very few situations where you can argue that he’s actively ill-intentioned. He’s done terrible things, but it’s almost never because he means harm. Even when he hurts people, he almost universally is doing what he thinks is right. Steve is a hero’s hero. This isn’t to say he’s flawless, he certainly is not that, but it is to say that he is almost too much a hero for his own good. He is so much the archetype, there is nothing in the world he wants so badly as to help people.

Such that he is almost too much of a hero. He is too determined, too selfless, too responsible. He holds himself to an impossible standard. He is such a good person that it is basically impossible for him to not be a hypocrite. It’s physically not possible to be as good of a person as Steve wants to be. Which means when he does fuck up, he almost makes the people around him seem like villains by-proxy, because whatever you can say about Steve, god damn is he TRYING to do what’s right.

He’s controlling, but not so much because of arrogance as much of a sense of responsibility and fault. In Steve’s world, there is no problem that cannot be fixed by him, and therefore he feels that anything that goes wrong is automatically his fault. Steve isn’t really a narcissistic person, but he is a patronizing one, it comes from fear, not really a feeling of superiority. He’s completely lost himself in his hero identity. I think about this wayyy too often but I’m constantly thinking about the way that Steve Rogers died in the forties, and Captain America came to the modern day.

Steve has no reference for just being himself in the modern day. Not only is he a man out of time, he’s a man unthawed in a hero’s costume to a world where he has been canonized as a hero in the eyes of the public. He has become the gold standard, even to himself. There is simply no room for regular old Steve Rogers in the modern world, Captain America came to the modern day, and he’s living on spent time.
