New Residents in the Mary Miller Center at DACC

-- The Math, Science, and Health Professions Division at DACC has some new "members." Please meet Regina and George. They are Sulcata tortoises, also known as African spurred tortoises, and are the largest mainland tortoise in Africa. They are the third largest species in the world and inhabit deserts, dry savannas and hot, arid areas, specifically the Southern edge of the Saharan desert in Africa. These tortoises can reach 24 to 36 inches in length and 100 to 200 pounds in weight. They are strictly herbivores (plant-eaters) and in the wild live exclusively on succulent plants and various types of grasses. Sulcata tortoises  can survive anywhere from 50 to 150 years in the wild.
