Paul Outerbridge: Command Performance

The first Paul Outerbridge (1896-1958) photo I ever saw is called The Triumph of the Egg (1932–shown above). I saw it in a textbook when I was studying photography in college, and it intrigued me. So much so that when I was assigned to recreate a famous photo, that was the photo I chose. Outerbridge, primarily a fashion and commercial photographer, was an early pioneer of the complex tri-color carbro photo process as well as an early proponent of applying modernist aesthetics to commercial photography. Having mastered the carbro process in the mid-1930s, he turned his attention to female nudes, seeing new possibilities with color photography. His nudes, which include early examples of fetish photography, would embroil him in scandal and eventually led to Outerbridge retiring from commercial photography and relocating from NY to California in 1943.

"Why are you so filthy?"

"Because you love it."

"Don't you dare...You're not going to have me practically naked in this movie theater."

"Is that not why you wore it…for this little date?"

Fitz looked up at the board displaying films and showtimes. Olivia answered emails on her phone as both stood in the queue for tickets.

"What are you in the mood for?" he said to her.

Olivia did not hear him initially, too busy was she conveying precise measurements and additional she wanted for her new dress. This had been the third time she had a change of heart on bridal attire. This time she was certain this dress was right. Unlike the first two gowns, she had felt this one in her gut. It represented the type of bride she felt she wanted to be, not who she thought she should be.

Receiving no reply, Fitz intervened again, this time bending down towards her face. "Psst, which film?" he whispered loudly.

Distractedly she answered, "I don't mind, but I don't want to watch anything too convoluted right now." Olivia continued tap taping away at the screen.

"Is that because your mind is elsewhere?" he asked, slightly accusingly.

Olivia caught his tone but resisted a defensive impulse. She smoothed her low ponytail before turning to look up at Fitz. Far from smug or disappointed, his look dared her to deny something false in his question.

"I was…" Fully digesting Fitz's expression, the excuse she was prepared to offer
