Whumptober Day 8: Sleep Deprivation (ME3, FemShep)
Rose Shepard blinked as the words on the screen blurred and she let out a yawn. Setting down the pad, she leaned back in her chair and lifted her feet so they rested on top of the desk while rubbing her tired eyes. The Normandy had just gotten updated reports on the conflict between the Quarians and Geth and what she was reading made her worried. "If we're going to win against the Reapers we need everyone to put aside their differences for the time being. I can't solve every fucking geopolitical problem overnight." she thought while waking her computer and looking at the travel time to where the Quarian Fleet was.
Seeing that they were still over five hours out, Rose wondered if that was enough for her to get some rack time. But before she could even head down the stairs to her bed and join Kaidan (who had gone to bed hours ago), there was chime followed by EDI's voice, Commander you are needed in the War Room.
"Can't it wait until later EDI?" Rose groaned, not wanting to get up unless it was a true emergency.
It can not. Urdnot Wrex is demanding to speak with you.
"Fuck me." Rose breathed, slowly dropping her feet to the floor and getting up with a resigned sigh. But if Wrex was demanding to see her, he had a good reason and she better deal with it. "I'll see what he wants and then back up here with plenty of time to sleep."
--
Rose exited the War Room dead on her feet. Wrex's 'little problem' had only spiraled until she was on a conference call with Hackett, the Salarian Delatross, and the Turian Primarch. Which had then taken three hours to make everyone happy. Running a hand through her hair, she stepped into the CIC and was awake enough to wave away the salutes and have everyone return to their duties. She was half a step away from the elevator when Traynor called out her name.
Smothering a groan, she turned towards the woman and said, "Yes?"
"Lieutenant Cortez needs these forms signed asap, Commander." Samantha said as she held out a small stack of datapads to Shepard. "Normally he could just sign them himself, but they're for some specialty mods so he needs your approval as well."
Rose just nodded her head while taking the stack. "I'll get right on it, thanks." Stepping into the elevator, she hit the deck for the commissary, knowing that she needed to coffee if she was going to get through the paperwork in time for them to get what they needed for the (possible) Quarian homeworld.
--
Rose signed the last requisition form and felt relief. "Maybe now I can at least get a few hours of rack time." she thought while gathering up the stack and walking towards the elevator, intent on dropping the stack off with Traynor so she could get them to Cortez and start the processing.
She'd pulled her fair share of all-nighters, most notably during the Skillian Blitz, but she'd always had the adrenaline rush to help carry her through and this time...all she had was the shitty Alliance coffee that the commissary carried. "What I wouldn't kill for an actual cup of coffee." she thought while leaning against the elevator wall as it moved up towards her cabin. "And meals that weren't War Rations as well."
Stepping out of the elevator, once again she was almost to her cabin door when her omni-tool pinged. "EDI I swear to god if it's not an actual emergency it can go to the duty officer." Rose all but growled, her temper growing short with the lack of sleep.
You are the duty officer, Shepard. As of ten minutes ago.
Rose glanced at the clock on her omni-tool and saw that EDI was right, as of ten minutes ago first shift had started.
Letting out a sigh, she turned around and walked towards the elevator. "Alright, what fire do I need to put out now?"
