      Nathan’s parents are out of town.

      Nathan’s parents are usually out of town. Sometimes, he thinks they spend more time out of town than in town. He felt neglected, but they had to work. They need the money. He’s never figured out how to tell anyone that he’s not good at being home alone. All the other teenagers get excited when their parents are away for the weekend; it’s an excuse to do whatever they want at home while they’re away. For Nathan, it’s a weekend of not being able to remember when to eat, anxiety over cleaning, and being too shy to ask anyone over.

      He started leaving the news playing to help himself keep track of time (when the six o’clock news starts playing, it’s time for dinner). The sound of voices also made him feel less lonely, especially when they played interviews with some of the superheroes from the Better World Bureau. That’s how he became especially interested in superheroes. They were like having other people to watch over him. Nathan started collecting any information he could get his hands on about the BWB, finding connections and stories that led him on the trails of some of their deepest secrets.

      But he was sixteen and got overwhelmed by loud noises, medium sized crowds, and even too much eye contact. He didn’t know what to do with government conspiracies and secret mad science projects being run by beloved superheroes.

      So the information stayed in shoeboxes under his bed, collecting dust. Until Nathan’s boyfriend abruptly revealed that he himself was going to be a superhero.
