things got out of hand really, really quickly.
gabriel had been at the hospital for a stupidly simple reason, to just get checked out after a fire. the ambulances had been busy with the patrons of the building, so he’d just driven himself to the hospital to make sure he wasn’t going to die of smoke inhalation. nothing too special for him, really. he knew he was fine, and after getting the go-ahead from the doctor, he went to chat with some of the nurses before his team got around to picking him up.
while chatting with the nurses, he heard the tell-tale commotion of an emergency patient being wheeled in. he saw the doctors and nurses running around, saw all their equipment as they tried to hook the person up before running them off to god-knows where. he hadn’t been paying too much attention, but gabriel looked over in time to see a familiar blonde head. his heart clenched for a moment, but he tried to convince himself that he hadn’t just seen his boyfriend wheeled into the emergency room, red covering him and the doctors around him. there was no way that the person was his blondie, right?
it hadn’t taken much longer after that for him to get a call. vincent. just seeing the name on his screen made him panic, and hearing what the man said? gabriel didn’t know if he wanted to rage, cry, or panic. he settled mostly on panicking, as he called in to the station and told them he couldn’t continue his shift. as he tried to run after the doctors to see where they went. as he yelled at the doctors to just let him fucking see jack, to see how bad it was, to see if it was enough for their sep bullshit to save him.
no one would let him see jack.
he spent the next god-knows-how-long in a constant switch between anger, guilt, and pain. gabriel had managed to change out of his work clothes and into some spare stuff from the hospital, and he’d have showered if he wasn’t worried that he’d get news about jack the second he left the waiting room. after far too long, a doctor came out and told him the basics. he was stabbed repeatedly. severe blood loss. currently stable, but unconscious. gabriel didn’t even know how to feel about that, he just wanted to see jack, make sure he was alive and going to be fine. he’d been through worse, anyway, right?
it took a while for gabriel to convince the doctors that he should be allowed to see jack. he was about to just say fuck it and wraith into his room when a nurse vouched for him and let him into the room. gabriel was never going to admit it, but he hesitated at the door. he’d seen jack hurt plenty of times, but he never got used to seeing the man in a hospital bed. he never wanted to get used to the sight. after a few minutes, gabriel managed to move a chair next to jack’s bed. he carefully took one of jack’s hands in his and sat there with him. he knew he could be there a while, that it was possible jack would be out for days, but gabriel wasn’t going to leave him. he had his phone and a charger - he could keep himself entertained until he knew jack was going to be okay.
