(Sorry for my bad bad eglish!)
I just finish re-watching this amazing show and, even if I already knew how it ends, it still made me an emotional wreckage. Maybe even more than the last time, because when Neal hugs June, leaves the card to Mozzie and tells Elizabeth that she, Peter and the baby are his family, this time I knew he’s saying goodbye and I felt a tide grip around my heart, which did go out of control when Mozzie loses it on Neal’s body and Peter starts crying on an hospital chair all alone with Neal’s anklet in his hands. His “You're free”, said with watery eyes and an expression of total devastation, is one of those moments in a tv show that makes an impression and you'll always remember.
And then there's the end end and when Peter's smile starts growing just like he realizes the truth, mine did to.
Now, some speculations on the finale. I read the interview with Jeff and he said something like Neal was “born bad” and couldn't change that, said that at the end he came back to the life he had before Peter, before the anklet. But he also said that the finale is an open one and I take that like an opening to interpretations, because the one Jeff gave us I don't like it. So, here's my interpretation.
Neal fakes his death to protect those around him. Indeed, we see him with the storage the episode after his conversation with Keller, who tells him that if you screw up the Panthers, even if they're behind bars, they still will make you pay by killing those around you.
Mozzie didn't know about Neal's plans on faking his death, at least until after the morgue scene, because that reaction was sincere. I think Neal contacts him soon after because one Mozzie has the money that he needs to escape and two, like Mozzie said at the beginning of the season, Neal would never run without him o at least without let him know.
Neal lets Peter know about him being alive but only after a year. Since Peter mentions the Panthers receiving the life sentence when he meets Mozzie in the park, I think that Neal wanted to be sure that they would have been sentenced before let anyone know about him, of course with the exception of Mozzie. Only then, even if it's not safe to let the world know yet, he lets at least Peter know because he can't let him believe forever that Neal's dead.
And then there's the article about the Louvre. If Neal was planning an heist, he wouldn't let them know and they would not have any reason to increase the security. If the theft already happened, than the article would have been about it and not about the security system. Instead, the subheading says something about a contract and an award and I think that is Neal that received that contract, that it's him the author of the new security system. I think that, like someone already speculate on some fanfiction, he could have open a sort of private security company, so that he still lives the thrill of planning a heist without really commit it.
Finally I hope, like maybe every fan of the show, that one day Neal will come back to New York and reunite with Peter and the others, because the thought that they'll never see each other again it's to much painfull.
