I felt like Danny's latest video was one of his best in the last couple of years. It was a return to the Danny I was originally drawn to, all concentrated in one video.
We got 'up to hijinx' Danny. 'Pointing out how messed up the world can be if kids need their own social media app and how that is rife with problems' Danny. 'Musical guitar playing and producing' Danny. 'Malibu Barbie' Danny.
My friend Robyn and I were talking about how it's such a good example of how taking your time and sitting with something for a while can produce better quality work.
I wondered, had he made this as a series of second channel videos, would he have taken the time to think about the role of social media and subtly included a rebuke of its prominence in people's lives? That young kids have honestly no business being on social media and it's fucked they should be encouraged to be? I think, evidenced by some of his disconnected takes in some of his second channel videos, no. He definitely wouldn't have taken the time to add in the neat little details like the sunglasses with Swaggy Jason. Would he have produced two absolute bangers as Swaggy Jason? Maybe. They seemed to take him about 15 minutes tops.
But overall, I think because he made this a months long project and took a break for real life in the midst of it, we ended up with what I lovingly term 'Peak Danny'.
Now, does he have the luxury of money to be able to do that? Absolutely. But do others also have that but don't seem to avail themselves of it? To be sure.
