My favorite thing of Shane is how much he cares and how gentle he is.
During the show, we usually see him as this genuinely funny guy that has crossed as mean to general viewers whose comments have made the fandom angry in the past. But if you actually watch three episodes and more, you’ll catch up with the fact that Shane is actually a very kind, gentle person.
In his dynamic with Ryan we see him as someone who cares deeply for his friend. He has mentioned before, half joking and half serious, that they have been through a lot together and both have mentioned Unsolved has brought them closer than they already were before the show.
He cares so much for Ryan, you can see it in the way he will be softspoken and almost slow when the man is nervous, just like he was in this last episode.
He first let Ryan talk about what has happened after seeing he was okay. He follows him with his eyes even when he is smiling and once Ryan starts moving to get out the place completely, Shane follows and keeps talking to him.
The way he worries about him is also something I haven’t seen in many people, but especially men: he never treats him like a child in these situations in spite of being gentler in his speak and whole demeanor. He lets Ryan talk and listens to him, doesn’t even contradict him even when he doesn’t believe in what Ryan does.
Ryan’s nervouness for what happens to him during Solos, when he gets things he persives as evidence, are things Shane sees like something normal and I’m sure once Ryan is calmer, Shane may express his opinion on the matter. But at the moment, when Ryan is done with his solo, he never says a negative word his way.
In this case, he genuinely left Ryan talk and dominate most the conversation at the beginning, and once he was done, Shane let him know they had heard him and it was time to go, in part because they were done but also because Ryan so obviously needed to go.
He doesn’t stop looking at Ryan, keeps contact with him as he manages to make himself smaller at the same time he is standing firm. Makes you wonder if he has had a hand in helping Ryan (or someone else) with his anxiety when shit hits the pan when it comes to locations that may scare him/make him nervous.
In this episode, we did hear him talk Ryan into finishing the investigation and put himself there where he was needed, because it’s their job. It reminds me of that story about how Ryan ran off the Sallie House almost on tears and Shane ran after him and comforted him before giving him a pet talk so he would go back inside and finish what they had started.
“This is our job now, finish the job”, something like that he said to Ryan back then. Three years ago? And now they here, in a place that genuinely scared the living hell out of Ryan, and that also gave them what can be considered a FBA.
This was my favorite part of the episode, because it’s their dynamic what makes this show so unique and the fact that they genuinely are friends and care for each other. And I love of Shane that the way he cares is so gentle, not many people is gentle, and I think that’s exactly what someone like Ryan needs when it comes to these places and the way his anxiety can get. They really are a perfect match for this job.
Hello :D I just wanted to share a surreal experience last night-- I was scrolling through YT and I see Worth It's 2017 three parter special?? And I didn't know Ryan and Shane were there??? And that they had those wasabi desserts omg that episode was SOMETHING they were very intense there
Oh, yes! I remember this one and the little melt down it caused in the fandom because none of us expected it, but also because it was so good. I love this ask because I was in a really bad place at the time it happened, so I never had the chance to talk about it on this blog, so thank you for this.
I particullary like this cameo because it feels domestic. For the aesthetic and subject, a dinner with friends for the Holidays, it’s so much fun to see them interact with other people and how they seem to really be a package deal like Shane once said almost four years ago.
This is one of those moments in which we can see how Shane was saying the truth when he said he is actually shy and doesn’t talk unless he is being talked to. While he is with people he works with, friends even, he is still mostly silent and smiling, eating and being his goofy self only when it’s his turn to participate or Ryan is the one interacting with him.
I love this moment in the kitchen when he is reacting to what he is tasting and everyone is looking at him with big smiles, but Ryan’s smile in particular is so damn fond and big–
Back then, I made a post about it, about how it’s the kind of fond smile of someone who knows him and who loves him deeply after so many years of being his friend. Everyone knows Shane is goofy and hella funny, but Ryan knows Shane better than anyone else in the room, and while he is used to his goofiness, it never gets old.
Next, we have Ryan who is hella playfull and kind of a brat in this video.
Even the way he is dressed, he looks younger and it’s a great contrast to Shane’s more dad/teacher look. He keeps being a little shit on the table and later gets Shane to play with him.
And I swear to God, there’s nothing more funny to see these two idiots get the wasabi ones after being little shits while everyone else was watching. Like OF COURSE they would.
Their reactions are peak comedy, too. It must had been such a Thing to see them get there, and that’s how this little brat got what he deserved.
Bless Steven, Adam and Andrew and their team for making these videos, and for getting these two to participate in it. The easthetic they gave us and the funny moments are something that has actually become one of my favorite Shane and Ryan moments ever.
I don't understand why Ryan got so scared in there? I get the jail was a ugly building but nothing really happened to them. What they captured in the place was found after, not in the moment. Don't you think he may just acted up for the camera?
No, I don’t think so.
Ryan is an anxious man, he shared with us recently that he deals with it and we have been able to see it during the show when it comes to supernatural investigations. So for him to walk into places where he believes something inhuman may be there with them in the dark is very anxiety inducing, would make him very nervous.
In the case of this episode in particular, previous to their solo investigations, notice the amount of sounds and the so they got around them. Believing or not aside, many noises you don’t have a direct source of in the dark can be unnerving for an alreasy frightened person, and he held up pretty good until it was the time for him to be alone.
The building, tall, dirty and with a heavy story, did not help the situation and we saw that he did feel things while alone. Again, regarding of if you believe or not, Ryan does. And for him, that was a moment that would induce a good scare.
Him “losing it” may as well be a show, yes, but for himself. If he imitates Shane and goofs around, he may feel better. He has told the audience Shane is a comfort, it’s who he goes to in these places because he feels safe. Doing what the big guy does in Ryan’s own way is probably a response to “how can I feel safe in the face of this unnerving darkness?”
It was a show, but it wasn’t fake.
I think most of us agree Ryan is hella brave and has become even braver, but the thing about bravery is that you have to be scared to overcome it and walk through it, being afraid and giving a step forward is what makes you brave.
Anyway, I think he got like this out if nervouness and anxiety, and made that show in order to try and feel safer/stronger.
Shane ignoring a jerk question from one of his own shaniacs and asking something random to Ryan? That's... kind of cute
He does that a lot, dkmdkdldld.
Reminds me of Shane rejecting houses because Ryan said no when during their season in In Control With Kelsey and the many times he took Ryan’s side at something during Post Mortems when other shaniacs said not so friendly stuff to Ryan or the show.
It has “only I can mock my friend” and he is ready to invalidate his own fanbase if it means protecting Ryan, we love one supporting friend.
