What are fractures and How would you diagnose them?
Fractures are breaks caused in the bones. They can be caused due to any sort of injury, accident, trauma, or a pre-existing bone-weakening condition like osteoporosis. There are different ways to analyze fractures.
A simple fracture is caused when the bone remains inside the skin and doesn't extend out, also called closed fractures.
A compound fracture is also called as open fractures. These broken bones enter through the skin. Compound fractures are more severe ones, their healing process may get affected due to the infection, for that antibiotic needs to be used.
There are many different subtypes of fractures lets have a look at them:
Comminuted Fracture: This type of fracture causes severe injury where the bones crack into several small pieces.
Avulsion Fracture: In this type of fracture, the bone is completely cut off from the main bone due to intense tearing off a part of the body.
Other types of fractures can be defined by the angle the bone is been hit or broken.
Diagnosis
When there is a bone break, the symptoms are like severe pain and swelling that doesn't reduce on its own. Doctors are able to identify the fractures by physical examination or by taking an X-ray. Dr. Prashanth S is an orthopedic surgeon in Pune. He is also well known for all types of Hand Surgery. The X-ray provides the doctor with a clear idea about the type of fracture and the intensity of the displacement of the bone.
It is very important for a person to visit a doctor after a bone injury, as the bones begin to heal very quickly after a fracture using any tissue available in its way. This can lead to misalignment of broken bone and can cause permanent disability or loss of function.
A broken bone is termed as ‘fracture’. A bone may be fractured completely or partially in so many ways, such as crosswise, lengthwise, and in multiple pieces. Certain common types of fractures include:
1). Stable Fracture: When the broken ends of the bones line up and are barely out of place, it is referred to as stable fracture.
2). Transverse Fracture: When the bone has a horizontal broken line, then it is considered as a transverse fracture.
3). Oblique Fracture: This type of fracture has an angled pattern of the broken bone
4). Comminuted Fracture: When the bone breaks into three or more pieces, it is considered as a comminuted fracture.

Lateral radiograph demonstrates a comminuted fracture of the distal radius; should be made of angulation and displacement, intra-articular or extra-articular involvement, and associated anomalies of the ulnar or carpal bones
