I have been made co-chair of a DEI committee for a large national organization. I attended my first meeting last night on Zoom. This committee has existed for four years, and its mission is to increase the diversity of the organization at all levels and make the org as a whole a welcoming space.

I asked them, "Do we have any demographic data?" This was supposed to be a formality. I really meant "Where is our demographic data kept, so I can start doing some analyses?"

The answer was NO? We have never taken demographic data on our members??? I am apparently the first person to suggest this.

I've noticed when environmental activists talk about new, clean technologies, they direct their solutions to achieving first world comfort. They don't think about the Third World children gathering lithium used in batteries for pennies.
