Show Review: 6/4/11 Morning... @ Maxwell's with Communication Redlight, Brian Carley and Weston.
There's something about going to see one of your favorite bands perform, there's something about seeing them perform at one of your favorite venues that makes it even better. June 4th started like any normal day for me, until I made my way to the Lightrail station and headed towards Hoboken. I got off at 9th street and began my walk towards Washington Street.
I handed the bouncer my ticket and walked into the familiar venue that holds some truly special memories for me. The first band up, Communication Redlight, I decided to check out before the show. Mind you, this is something I rarely do. I really got into their sound the night before when I checked them out on bandcamp. Their overall punk sound brought me back to my middle school days. The days when shows were actually thrown at the local Elks Lodge. I was pretty excited to see if they lived up to my expectations live, and they did. They were one of the few punk bands as of late that really stood out to me. I highly recommend checking them out, their 2009 demos are for free download at http://www.communicationredlight.bandcamp.com. This band needs to be on your radar.
Morning... followed Communication Redlight. During their set the band played some fan favorites such as The Red Room, and Fight Off Your Demons but also debuted three new songs that were available on a free demo that the band put out that night. The Eastern Lean, one of the new tracks, happened to be my favorite of the set. The track has the potential to be a single off of their next album, which they are set to start working on sometime in the future. Instrumentally it has a feel good vibe and the lyrics are pretty nifty. Along with newer tracks more older crowd favorites such as Move Your Head and a new version of Anywhere was included in Morning...'s setlist. The band's overall performance just keeps getting better and better each time I see them. Check out their free demo over at http://www.morning.bandcamp.com. As a special treat, Brian Carley of Penfold performed an acoustic set under his solo project The Waltz. At first I thought that an acoustic performance in between Morning... and the headliner, Weston, was a bit strange. However, after his first two songs I realized that he fit in pretty well. In a sense, I considered him the palate cleanser of the evening, although by no means was he bland nor boring. His overall emotion was clear throughout his set and I throughly enjoyed it.
The crowd began to pack in for Weston and the smell of beer and sweat became stronger. I must say it is one of my favorite aromas. Weston played for 90 minutes and there was never a silent moment; from fans yelling the lyrics and even song requests, everyone was involved some how. The loyalty Weston fans have impressed me and gave me an increasing amount of hope that as long as you make good music, the fans will still flock to see you. After all, the show was practically sold out. Granted Weston is one of those bands that when they go on tour, it is a big deal. After all this was their first time touring in over a year, and oddly enough I saw them play at the same venue on their last tour. I wish I didn't get into them as late as I did.
Overall the show was full of awesomeness that if you missed it, well then you missed an amazing time and should be ashamed of yourself.
