Pierce’s character could have been really great and had a wonderful growth arc, but I’m convinced Chevy Chase put a stop to that. Because like, you see moments of growth here and there, and I can see what the writers were trying to go for at times, but I’m convinced Chevy Chase liked playing the asshole racist and somehow got his way (maybe threatening to quit or smth idk) until Dan Harmon possibly had enough and the show had enough traction to axe him (this is just me speculating but if anyone has any more info on Dan Harmon and Chevy Chase’s conflict, I would love to hear it).

And it SUCKS because I would have loved to see that growth. I love the idea of you’re never too old to change, and you might be a product of your environment but you don’t have to stay that way. I would also have loved to see more of Pierce deconstructing his relationship with his dad and focusing on the found family aspect, not even just with the study group, but with Gilbert as well.

This is the first group of waterloo participants to be part of the artistic journey with artist duo. Artist duo has lots of reflections about the entire process. Although everything turns out really positive and well, there are still areas we are hoping to look out for the next time and also for future artist residencies. We talked about having two separate spaces, one communal for community engagement and a private one for the artist. We realised artists required a lot of quiet time for self exploration and reflection hence that personal space is really crucial. We even thought of looking into public code of conduct and ethnical concerns for public engagement in both public and residency spaces. The role of the community artist involves taking risk, trial and error to allow creativity to take place. Artist duo has taken the courage to push artistic boundaries while managing every single human interaction in a sensitive approach. We are looking forward to the next group of art making in our humble space!

People are Boycotting Beauty and the Beast?

I find it truly ridiculous that there are actually people in this world who are boycotting the new Beauty and the Beast because of a gay character. I think it adds to the original story about intolerance. 

If you look closely, every good character in the story is criticized because they don’t meet society’s standards. Belle was treated as strange by the entire village because she was a woman who liked to read. The Beast was seen as a monster because of his looks. Belle’s father was about to be sent to an asylum for being a little too eccentric. They were all treated unjustly, but it was clear what the cause was.

LeFou was different. 

He was mistreated by Gaston and the rest, but there was no clear reason as to why. “Making him gay” or even questioning his sexuality (because I believe that was the true intention), builds the character and highlights the main theme of the story. 

If you actually did some research, you would know that the original Disney tale was heavily influenced by their lead lyricist, Howard Ashman; an openly gay man who died of AIDs shortly after the film’s first screening. It was his idea to make Beast one of the two central characters for that reason. 

“Specifically for him it was a metaphor for AIDS. He was cursed and this curse had brought sorrow on all those people who loved him and maybe there was a chance for a miracle and a way for the curse to be lifted. It was a very concrete thing that he was doing,” said Bill Condon (director of the live action). 

This was a beautiful tribute to a man who filled many of our childhoods with wonderful music. Please stop ruining it.
