As someone who has dabbled in both video essays and meta/analysis stuff on tumblr I have noticed how the two formats differ quite a bit in spite of their superfical similarities.
The first notable difference has to be the scope. Meta tends to be far more specific and narrow than video essays. Yes, the best video essays tend to have an "angle" they tackle their subject matter from than just "everything and the kitchen sink approach" and there are more narrower videos like character analyses, but even then they tend to be broader than meta. And that's because meta tends to be very specific. If I make a video essay on say, Moomins, I am going to make one that explores the queerness in Moomin or the way the anime both improved and kinda butchered some characters (yes this is about Snork and Hemulen thank you). Whie if I made a meta post...okay I would absolutely do about how 90s anime handled Snork vs the books because that's fascinating topic. But I woud go far deeper. I would go far more into my examples, and elaborate far more in detph, because i have all the time and energy and am not fighitng against attention span of people.
Another difference I have noted is that meta is firmly made for people who are fans of the source material while video essays are not. As such meta tends to not explain unnecessary details, whereas video essays often re-iterate the orginals plot to the point they have become infamous of just "recapping" the plot because well, they need to. You don't know if your audience knows the depths of the work youre analyzing, especially if you are more of a general/jack of trades channel that covers multiple topics than just one or two with clear fandom overlap. As said, meta is made for fans of the series, so we don't need to be redundant. To give an example, in my Bionicle videos I summarize the plot of the movie before going into detail. Whereas in my meta posts I don't feel the need to do that, unless its absolutely necessary.
But by far the most notable difference is that video essays tend to have...well a point to them. It isn't just about analyzing a media, it's saying something deeper with your own art, whether its about the artwork in question, the human condition, the state of our world or even the creator themselves. Video essay tells a story, one with themes and messages itcreator wants to tell the audience. Meta doesn't need to do that. It can do that, I certainly have done so in the past with some of my Bionicle posts. But that isn't the point of meta. A meta can exists on its own, without anything deeper to say outside what it says about the work itself. It doesn't need this additional mumbo jumbo that often feel necessary for video essays.
I think it boils down to the fact the two serve ultimately very different purposes from one another. A video essay is supposed to entertain, it is meant to tell a story. Yes, it can (and should) be insightfu and educational, but ultimately you are creating a form of entertaiment, something that is meant to be fun and enjoyable for it's audience. Meanwhile, a meta post ultimately is to analyze. It doesn't care if you as a reader are enjoyed or having fun, it's about exploring something and going depths to it.
Or I guess to explain it shortly: video essays are fundamentally an art form and entertaiment, while meta is more like, academia.

Hey I kinda wanna compare terraria classes with tf2 classes. So yeah.
Easy one first summoner is like engineer. This classes main thing is having a secondary damage output that is more effective than you are. However they both have a way to control that secondary damage with targeting or a whip with summoner and the wrangler with engie.
Next melee is like soldier. You may say “why not demo knight or spy” and to that I say is because the melee class in terraria is stupidly good at basically everything. It is most likely the most overpowered class, and similarly soldier is canonically stupid and good at basically everything. That’s why he is known as a generalist.
Ok it’s starting to get hard uhhh mage is like scout or demo. They are similarly good at a lot of things but have worse defensive capabilities. That’s all I can come up with.
And now ranger. Ranger can basically be any class. There are rocket launchers like soldier, shot guns like scout or any shot gun using class, bows and long range guns like sniper, flame throwers like pyro, and grenade launchers like the demo. The least class that the ranger class has in common with is probably spy, but there is still a revolver. I guess there is no such thing as revving up a minigun in terraria, but there are still things like the mega shark and sdmg which are rapid firing high damage guns, but idk.
Oh and for those people asking about thrower (which I don’t think even exists anymore) it’s like spy I guess. Knives and oh wow shurikens. So both have great weapons for people who watch anime (or as a lot of people call them, weebs) also both classes kinda suck at killing good players or strong enemies.
So a friend recently introduced me to a show called Chuck.
The character Casey is so much like Skipper it's almost scary. Like.... If I had a hc for human Skipper, it's him.
Also the character Chuck has very strong Kowalski musing as well. Perhaps not in appearance as much but his personality matches pretty well.
The two also have a similar (and healthier!) dynamic so it gives plenty of ideas for ways Kowalski and Skipper could interact in a healthier way as the series has progressed.
Also, the character Sarah, my friend and I deemed her non-evil Francis since she and Casey don't trust each other and she's fake dating Chuck for their cover. Honestly, gives good gentle Francis and Franski musings too.
Not sure if other people ever watch shows and deem/imagine them characters from other shows, but if you don't you should give it a go. It's so much fun and can give you so many ideas you could work into your own wips.
We're only on S2 so far, but it's a cool show.
Here’s a work in progress for the comic I’m making with @notaclevernamer! If you wanna read it, please click the link here! All of the first chapter is uploaded so I’m jazzed beyond all belief.
I’m also kind of surprised at how far my art has come in the last year because here are the concepts I did for this guy in the spring/last fall:
true that I switched from pen/ink to tablet, but still! (Although I think the way I drew the cloak in the last one slaps super hard and I might copy it lmao)
