EuroBracketry: The Rules

For every good bracket there are rules. This is no exception.

I run a full, double elimination bracket with seeding for each year including every song submitted as a contender for Eurovision

Every song is paired with another, and the best one goes through. If the song loses, it gets placed in the losers bracket. If it loses when in the losers bracket it's gone. Eventually this leads to one song that's won every match, and another that's the winner of the losers bracket. These face each other in a Grand Final.

This means that every song needs to lose twice before it's knocked out from the running. Meaning I've watched and listened to every song at least twice. For the songs that make it a long way, I may have seen them at least ten times. And yes, I watched every single one through all the way for every match. No skipping. Where possible I tracked down the actual performance from the National Final. If that wasn't available then any other performance, and then the recorded track.

As I've not seen many of these entries before this bracket, the repeated listens mean my opinion a song may evolve during the competition and what starts of winning may eventually fall from my favour (and vice versa). Those songs that make to the final rounds really have lodged themselves in my brain.

I'll present 26 songs for the final results - the ideal size for a Eurovision competition! These will be the top 24 as winning through the bracket plus 2 wildcards in 25th and 26th place chosen by me from those songs finishing between 25th and 32nd. This gives me some wiggle room for those songs that may have had bad luck and been eliminated slightly too soon.

There are no rules on which countries can and can't make the final 26. It's likely that several countries will not be represented whilst other countries may have more than one song in the final 26. These are purely the best 26 songs for that year regardless of country.
