Powered by a 1493cc single-overhead-cam straight four dry sump engine, and twin Horizontal SU carburettors. The aluminium body was mounted on a separate steel chassis which had beam axles front and rear with semi-elliptic leaf springs. 4-Wheel drum brakes, mechanically operated at the rear, and by cable at the front. Introduced at £ 650 in 1933, the price was reduced to 595 for 1933. The cars were offered as 2 seater with a 102 inch wheelbase or as a four seater with a wheelbase of 120 inches. According to the standards of the early 1930s, Aston Le Mans were speedy cars – compared to the pace of the MG and Singer- with a top speed in the region of 85 mph (137 km/h) and acceleration from 0–50 mph (0–80 km/h) in 16 seconds. Chassis Number D3/252/L Is one of the most recognisable of the model, featuring on the cover of the Osprey Automotive book Aston Martin 1913–1947 by Inman Hunter, photographed in full flight at a race circuit. It has also been campaigned and maintained by Ecurie Bertelli since 1986. It was supplied new to a Mrs Armstrong of Hethpool in Northumberland in 1933, finished in tw0-tone grey and fitted with a four seater body specified with a twin exhaust pipes, an extra door for the rear seats, an outside hood, and a special 6:1 final drive ratio. The history of the Cortina Lotus began in 1961. Colin Chapman had been wishing to build his own engines for Lotus, mainly because the Coventry Climax unit was so expensive. Colin Chapman's chance came when he commissioned Harry Mundy (a close friend and designer of the Coventry Climax engine and technical editor for Autocar) to design a twin-cam version of the Ford Kent engine. Most of the development of the engine was done on the 997cc and 1,340cc bottom end, but in 1962 Ford released the 116E five bearing 1,499 cc engine and work centred on this. Keith Duckworth, from Cosworth, played an important part in tuning of the engine The engine's first appearance was in 1962 at the Nürburgring in a Lotus 23 driven by Jim Clark. Almost as soon as the engine appeared in production cars (Lotus Elan), it was replaced with a larger capacity unit of 1558cc Whilst the engine was being developed, Walter Hayes (Ford) asked Colin Chapman if he would fit the engine to 1,000 Ford saloons for Group 2 homologation. The Type 28 or Lotus Cortina or Cortina Lotus (as Ford liked to call it) was duly launched. Ford supplied the 2-door Cortina bodyshells and took care of all the marketing and selling of the cars, whilst Lotus did all the mechanical and cosmetic changes. The major changes involved installing the 1,557 cc engine together with an Elan close ratio gearbox, he rear suspension was drastically altered and lightweight alloy panels were used for doors, bonnet and boot. Lightweight casings were fitted to gearbox and differential. All the Lotus factory cars were painted white with a green stripe (although Ford built some for racing in red, and one customer had a dark blue stripe due to being superstitious about green). The cars also received front quarter bumpers and round Lotus badges were fitted to rear wings and to the right side of the radiator grille. Initially, the engines were built by J. A Prestwich of Tottenham and then Villiers of Wolverhampton. In 1966, Lotus moved to Hethel in Norwich where they had their own engine building facilities To homologate the car for Group 2, 1000 were required to be built in 1963, and the car was duly homologated in September 1963. In the same month, in the car's first outing, in the Oulton Park Gold Cup, the car finished 3rd and 4th behind two Ford Galaxies, but beat the 3.8-litre Jaguars which had been dominant in saloon car racing for so long. Soon Ford were running cars in Britain, Europe, and the USA, with Team Lotus running cars in Britain for Ford, and Alan Mann Racing running cars in Europe, also on behalf of Ford. Originally built for an attempt on the one hour light car record, using standard Aston Martin parts on a specially built narrow chassis and an engine developed for the 1922 French Grand Prix, Aston Martin. The body was hand crafted by the De Havilland Aircraft Company who had a great deal of experience in streamlining. The first body was built with a hinged upper part of the cockpit for access by driver Kensington Moir and earned the nickname the Oyster. Later modified to make it more practical it became known as Razorblade. The shutters on the radiator are designed to be opened and closed allowing the driver to adjust water temperature During the original record attempt driver S.C.H.Davis suffered shedding of the front off side tyre at high speed on several occasions and the attempt was abandoned. The car went on to a long and successful racing career in the hands of Davis and George Eyston and many others. At 18 inches it is believed to have been the narrowest racing car body ever. It was subsequently sold and displayed at the Harrah Motor Museum in the USA before returning to the UK and is an active participant in VSCC events.
