Just finished an online competitive debate. Sounded as fierce as i could, and ended strong. I turned off my mic, faced my partner, and loudly yelled "I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE FUCK I WAS TALKING ABOUT. I LOST MYSELF" and we were laughing

And then

I realized

the mic wasn't turned off.

i cannot believe how tiring speech writing is for my brain, and i say this as someone who very much enjoys writing... dont do competitive speech and debate if you dont wanna feel fried

i would have liked to write more about my characters afterwards but i will resort to thinking about them instead, words have left me

im doing my 1st ever debate on Tuesday and am kinda nervous, so I wondered if you had any tips for a 1st timer?

im not sure if im doing the for or against side yet but I'll prep both regardless!

And omg, exciting! But also terrifying- dw man I've been doing debate for 3 years and still get butterflies *cries in I have to leave for a three day debate competition tomorrow and I hate everything*

But im more than happy to give you some tips!!! <3

Firstly though, are you doing Team Policy, Lincoln Douglas, or Parliamentary debate?? I've done LD and Parli a handful of times and I do TP mainly, so I should be able to give tips for each!

Because in TP, you can try and prep against the other team when you're neg, but realistically you don't know their case. But if they're someone in your class and you do know their case, then yes you probably should! You don't even have to format your entire speech (or whoever the 1nc is's speech.... yes i said is's i just woke up i cant grammar) but just gathering some evidence would be nice! But me and my partner have one rounds just based off of logic alone. As the neg, you don't have the bourbon off proof, so you don't need evidence. Your job is to just find any sort or hole/flaw in the affs case and stock issues (Solvency - does their plan actually solve for the harms/problems presented? Significance - is the plan they're presenting Significant enough to be held at a federal level - or is it only helped maybe 10 people out of the millions in the US (or where ever you are lol)? Topicality - does the plan follow under the actual resolution/topic you're debating on (ex: debating on cats when you're supposed to be debating on Healthcare)? And Inherency (i spelt that wrong) - whether or not the problem is already being solved (ex I've seen from my debate: people debating on removing the 50% tariffs on Brazil but they've recently been removed).

But in LD and Parli, yes you do have to prep against the other team. Cause in LD, you have your own justifications and have to prove that your values are better then the Affs. Parli it's all logic based so you just have your own line of arguments.

But if you lmk which form of debate you're doing, I'm more than happy to help you prep for it and give you tips! I can show you my past flows/advice for prep time/evidence formatting/etc. If you'd like! Or just give you generic tips lolll 🩷
