Teaching sucks.
I went all the way from Kindergarten through undergrad, then spent nearly 3 years tutoring in a community college, got into grad school, and landed a teaching job, without ever hearing that there is one way to structure a paragraph: 1) Assertion 2) Evidence 3) Analysis. Apparently that is the only acceptable way (according to the director). I wish I had known about this "rule" before I had taught for 12 weeks with only two days of training (more than half of which was about how to write a syllabus and the first day's assignment).
Also, I mean, I've written plenty of paragraphs that didn't follow that structure and nobody ever fucked with me about it. Just sayin'.
My First Semester Teaching College
In retrospect, I always tell myself that I don't make much of a difference, but seeing people's abilities to express themselves in writing change and improve over time is really a great feeling. Also, allow me to break down the essays I gave this semester by topic:
Diagnostic: Fuck the Sensationalized Entertainment Industry
First In-Class Essay: Fuck the Police and their Bullshit War on Drugs/Ferguson
First Formal Essay: Fuck Capitalism
Second In-Class Essay: Fuck Regional Stereotypes
Second Formal Essay: Fuck Classism
Third In-Class Essay: Fuck Voluntary Ignorance
Third Formal Essay: Fuck the Patriarchy
Fourth In-Class Essay: Fuck Racist Media Representation
Fourth Formal: Choose three essays to explain why the phrase "Fuck Pre-determined Identities" is true.
You can make a difference, after all.
Tuesday Tips -- Composition 101, Rule of 1/3
This is an easy one to remember. Divide your canvas in third, both horizontal and vertical. And put your focal point where the line intersect.
Sometimes I don't always have it right away at my initial sketch, then no worries, just move around your canvas a bit and adjust it.
This example is from KFP Legend of the Masters when I worked with Max Boas and Nate Wragg.
Cheers,
Griz
