PSA to all starting composers who don’t think they’re good enough to pursue composition
Don’t compare yourself to the composers above you. Compare yourself to your own progress.
Listen to these two composition excerpts I wrote five years apart which measure my own personal progress. One written as a discouraged young composer like many of you, and one after 5 years of progress.
If you do the same, you’ll have a better gauge at how you are advancing.
If you measure your progress by comparing yourself to Tchaikovsky or Brahms, of course you won’t be as good. Instead, look at the music you’re writing now compared to what you were writing two or three years ago.
If you’re just starting to write music, know that if you continue on this path you’re not going to be at your current stage forever.
